MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strengthen and maintain Greenpeace’s network of international media contacts covering East Asia issues, in particular China issues, including handling media enquiries.

2. Work with other communications officers to plan, co-ordinate and execute media activities for international media based in East Asia, primarily in Beijing, such as report launches, conferences, and on-the-ground events and activities.

3. Develop communication strategies targeted at international audiences to generate stories in mainstream and online media on Greenpeace East Asia’s work.

4. Write, edit and proofread English campaign and communications materials to help generate stories in international media, including but not limited to media releases, briefings, magazine articles, background information, web features and reports.

5. Ensure communication strategies, tactics and messages are reflected in all media and communications materials released to international media, working closely with the Communications and Deputy Communications Directors to ensure coherence of public messaging and strategy.

6. Work with media and image officers to co-ordinate the selection of videographers and photographers for Greenpeace East Asia media activities.

7. Provide communications input on the future direction of campaigns, projects and activities, feeding back on successful and unsuccessful communications strategies and media coverage in respect to international media.

8. Build and maintain a sound general knowledge of all Greenpeace campaigns and issues in order to be capable of responding to general press inquiries.

9. Monitor the trends of international media’s interest for China’s environmental, as well as other political, economic, and social issues, in order to keep Greenpeace East Asia campaign and other communications colleagues updated.

10. Ensure that Greenpeace English communication materials are accurate, professional, and adhere to organizational image.

11. Proactively seek and recommend opportunities for communication projects and work related to international media.

12. Be on call after hours and weekends as requested.

 

REQUIREMENTS

SKILLS

1. Proven track record in the media: Experience in working in the media. Wide knowledge of and enthusiasm for how the international media operates in East Asia, in particular in China. Good contacts in the international media.

2. Interpersonal, negotiating and communication abilities: Ability to work within teams, to speak publicly, to interact with different stakeholders and sectors, to gain new allies and to promote coalition work. Strong ability to deal with international media.

3. Organizational and time management skills: Ability to manage multiple projects and address fluctuating priorities and tight deadlines. Ability to do office and off-site communications work.

4. Leadership and judgment skills: Exhibit confidence and provide direction in planning, organizing and coordinating communication activities and project teams.

5. Planning skills and flexibility: Ability to develop new, creative approaches and advance communication goals and objectives.

6. Research and analytical skills: Ability to evaluate information, plan strategies and undertake effective risk assessment.

7. Tact and enthusiasm: Ability to function effectively within a fast-paced atmosphere, under public scrutiny.

8. Computer skills: Ability to get on top of a variety of computer and internet based tools for communication, analysis and networking. Knowledge of internet culture and familiarity with the tools essential.

9. Writing skills: Excellent English writing skills with good command of grammar and language. Ability to read Chinese and speak Mandarin essential.

 

KNOWLEDGE

1. Knowledge of the overall goals and intent of Greenpeace including policies, guidelines, programs, campaigns and project activities.

2. Knowledge of environmental issues in general.

3. Knowledge of international and East Asia based media, outlets, communication avenues, techniques, practices, scope, audiences and impact.

4. Knowledge of campaign techniques, strategies and practice
