Marine Management Area Science - Center for Applied Biodiversity Science

Conservation International’s Marine Management Area Science (MMAS) Program (www.conservation.org/mmas) is seeking an intern with social science background (with Master’s degree or working towards a Masters degree) for research assistance on a management effectiveness of marine managed areas project, full time for six months, starting immediately. The work comprises: (1) quantitative/statistical analysis of social data; (2) synthesis of research results of socioeconomic and governance effects of marine managed areas; and (3) the integration analysis of socioeconomic and governance effects with ecological effects. The main research questions are: 

  •  What are the socioeconomic (eg, food security, livelihoods, non-monetary benefits, equitable distribution of benefits) and governance (eg, management and institutional structures, stakeholder participation, compliance by resource users, access to resource) effects of marine managed areas?
  •  What are the factors (eg, perceptions of resource condition, awareness of rules and regulations, social infrastructure/support, MPA governance) that influence MMA effects?

 

The main focus will be in the four MMAS nodes: Belize; Brazil; Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascaspe- Panama and Ecuador; Fiji. The results will substantially contribute to the design and implementation of other socio-economic studies as well as to ensure adaptive decision-making to further marine management area  effectiveness and ultimately conserve marine ecosystems and improve human wellbeing, in the nodes and globally.  Applicants are expected to have strong research interests particularly in social science as applied to coastal and marine ecosystems, with competence in quantitative/statistical methods pertinent to the marine socioeconomic area.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The MMAS Intern will provide technical support to the MMAS Program's social science research component. The MMAS Intern will work closely with the MMAS Director for Social Science Research and Outreach in the: (1) quantitative/statistical analysis of socioeconomic data from four MMAS nodes: Belize; Brazil; Easter Tropical Pacific Seascaspe (ETPS)- Panama and Ecuador; Fiji; (2) synthesis of research results of socioeconomic and governance effects of marine managed areas; and (3) the integration analysis of socioeconomic and governance effects with ecological effects.

 

Specific tasks include:

  • Identify, gather, review and synthesize literature on the socioeconomic and governance effects of marine managed areas
  • Develop and maintain an electronic database/inventory of all references on management effectiveness of MPAs (focus on  socioeconomic and governance)
  • Maintain data from each MMAS node in excel spreadsheet including data management (eg. MS Access)
  • Conduct statistical analyses of socioeconomic and governance data including various statistical and multivariate regression methods
  • Assist in cross-node synthesis of the socioeconomic and governance research findings in four MMAS nodes (Belize, Brazil, ETPS, Fiji)
  • Assist in integration analysis of socioeconomic, governance and ecological aspects of marine management
  • Prepare technical report and draft manuscript
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director for Social Science Research and Outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills:

  • Completed Master’s degree or working towards a Masters degree a field of Applied Economics (eg, resource economics, environment economics) or a related relevant discipline with some background in economics
  • A good command of statistics and use of excel spreadsheets.
  • Competent in quantitative/statistical methods with experience in various statistical data analysis including basic statistics (frequency distribution, mean – variance and cross tabulations), analysis of socioeconomic data, key relationships and correlations among the attributes, etc.
  • Experience in SAS, SPSS, JMP or other economic/statistical  software (eg, STATA)
  • Knowledge of MS Access
  • Relevant work experience in socioeconomic research and coastal/marine issues highly desirable
  • Excellent writing skills are essential.
