Marine Management Area Science - Center for Applied Biodiversity Science Reports to: Director, Social Science Research and Outreach Arlington, Virginia Conservation International’s Marine Management Area Science (MMAS) Program (www.conservation.org/mmas) is seeking an intern with social science background (with Master’s degree or working towards a Masters degree) for research assistance on a management effectiveness of marine managed areas project, full time for six months, starting immediately. The work comprises: (1) quantitative/statistical analysis of social data; (2) synthesis of research results of socioeconomic and governance effects of marine managed areas; and (3) the integration analysis of socioeconomic and governance effects with ecological effects. The main research questions are:
The main focus will be in the four MMAS nodes: Belize; Brazil; Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascaspe- Panama and Ecuador; Fiji. The results will substantially contribute to the design and implementation of other socio-economic studies as well as to ensure adaptive decision-making to further marine management area effectiveness and ultimately conserve marine ecosystems and improve human wellbeing, in the nodes and globally. Applicants are expected to have strong research interests particularly in social science as applied to coastal and marine ecosystems, with competence in quantitative/statistical methods pertinent to the marine socioeconomic area. RESPONSIBILITIES:The MMAS Intern will provide technical support to the MMAS Program's social science research component. The MMAS Intern will work closely with the MMAS Director for Social Science Research and Outreach in the: (1) quantitative/statistical analysis of socioeconomic data from four MMAS nodes: Belize; Brazil; Easter Tropical Pacific Seascaspe (ETPS)- Panama and Ecuador; Fiji; (2) synthesis of research results of socioeconomic and governance effects of marine managed areas; and (3) the integration analysis of socioeconomic and governance effects with ecological effects.
