The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is looking for an intern, based at ZSL's offices inRegentsPark, to provide support for the newly established IUCN Anguillid Specialist Sub-Group (ASSG). ZSL are the lead partner in this group, and have extensive experience working with European eels and also in carrying out Red List assessments. The aim of the ASSG is to promote and facilitate the conservation of Anguillid eel species globally, and the key role of this post would be to support this by collating available data for a workshop devoted to carrying out Red List assessments of the Anguillid species.
This is a desk-based internship based in the UK.
Main tasks would include (but not exhaustive):
- Co-ordinating the collation of data on the population status of Anguillid species
- Liaising with Anguillid eel stakeholders in the fields of science, conservation, industry and government to gather additional information on threats and conservation measures in place for these species
- Drafting Red List assessments based on collated information, consistency checking of assessments to meet the required standards for publication on the IUCN Red List, and production of species range maps following the IUCN guidelines for freshwater fishes
- Supporting the organisation of a workshop to finalise assessments of the Anguillid eel species for inclusion in the IUCN Red List
- Supporting the IUCN ASSG in the general running of the group
- Contribute towards ZSL’s European eel project – this may involve London-based fieldwork.
- Liaise with ZSL development and press office (press releases, website support etc)
- Attend relevant ZSL meetings and events
The ideal candidate should have:
- A university background in aquatic ecology and/or relevant biological/zoological sciences (or equivalent) – preferably to the MSc level
- Knowledge of the IUCN Red Listing process
- Excellent English both written and spoken
- Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods
- Excellent IT skills
ZSL is offering:

- 25th February 2013 – 26th August 2013.
- Full time, 4 or 5 days per week
