Intern Position: Kenya Coastal Forest Biodiversity Assessment

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is looking for an intern, based at ZSL's offices in Regents Park, to provide technical support on a long term project on the Kenyan coastal forests. The Kenyan coastal forest survey project is a collaborative project between ZSL, Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS) and WWF.

Main tasks would include:

  1. Helping with camera trap data analysis (mammal inventory, species encounter rates, area of occurrence and occupancy, activity patterns, species richness etc.).
  2. Helping with design and analysis of community surveys.
  3. Helping with analysis of remote sensing data. 
  4. Helping compile scientific publications.
  5. Helping in the preparation of biodiversity assessment report for the Kilifi and Lamu coastal forests.
  6. Attending meetings and events related to the East African programme.

The work involved will be desk-based only in the first instance.

The ideal candidate should:

  • have an undergraduate degree or above in ecology or environmental science
  • have excellent English written skills
  • be IT proficient including the use of statistical packages
  • have good knowledge of quantitative research methods
  • be hard working and self motivated.

All candidates must also be able to prove that they have the right to work in the UK

ZSL offers:

  • A professional working environment
  • Supervision by Conservation Programme staff and interaction with scientists and conservation biologists working at the Institute of Zoology and Conservation Programmes at ZSL.
  • Operational experience  within an active conservation organisation
  • Facilities including computer, internet, library and relevant software
  • Up to a 12 month opportunity with daily expense (travel Zones 1-6 and lunch costs - max £5 per day)

Period of volunteer placement:

  • 1st May 2011 – up to 31st October 2011
  • Minimum three days per week with five days holiday and public holidays
