Description

Conservation International’s (CI) Internship Sponsored By The Trott Family Foundation seeks students interested in gaining career skills in the non-profit sector.   As a leader in conservation, local capacity-building, and partnership work, Conservation International offers a unique learning platform and environment for interns to gain real-world, practical experience. We believe that developing emerging talent is an important way for CI to invest in the future and to sustain conservation goals for the benefit of humanity. Our internships are designed for committed individuals who want to serve the organization in a field and discipline needed to successfully advance our mission.   We provide opportunities for future professionals and leaders to become familiar with our mission, strategy, and values and expose students to the business and management of an NGO, field work and research, and partnerships.

The goal for this internship will be: the CARPE Landscape 10 (= LS10) ‘Plan d’utilisation des terres’ (PUT = the Landscape’s Land-Use Plan) is a tool for biodiversity conservation.

The objectives are:

  • Determine how the PUT can contribute to the conservation of the Landscape Species
  • Determine how the PUT can be made operational in CARPE Phase III
  • Contribute lessons learned from this assessment to planning for CARPE Phase III.

CI-DRC Program has long been the leader of Landscape 10 under the USAID-CARPE Program during which the sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources has the overarching goal. The first two phases have involved field research activities to assess and in-depth analysis of biodiversity and threats, and elaboration of strategies towards biodiversity conservation within the landscape. One of the key outputs of these two phases is the landscape’s Land-Use Plan (“Plan d’Utilisation des Terres”), a key master document that shall become the reference guide to the sustainable management of the landscape and its resources.

As we enter Phase III, now is the phase of implementation of the LUP guidelines at the macro- and micro-level. This proposal to Conservation International (CI) Internship Sponsored By The Trott Family Foundation, is to support a 4-month (May – August 2012) internship to prepare a ‘road map’ for implementation of the ‘Plan d’ Utilisation des Terres (PUT)’ in Phase III. Objectives include determining which stakeholders make conservation policy and action, engage with those as identified and defined, and design innovative approaches to impact-based monitoring and evaluation of its implementation. The ultimate application of this internship’s results will be in wildlife conservation strategic planning and impact based evaluation. This internship will contribute to construct a landscape-wide stakeholders platform for biodiversity conservation, which will strengthen conservation agencies (including CI-DRC and our donor, USAID-CARPE) to foster more effective conservation policy and practice through multiple land-use planning.
