Description

We are looking for an Illegal Fishing Policy Officer who will be responsible for promoting and leveraging the EU’s leadership role in international fisheries governance, and particularly in the global fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, to achieve legal, transparent and fully traceable seafood supply chains and sustainably managed fisheries globally. S/he will report to the Head of European Marine Policy and collaborate with the WWF EU Ocean Policy Team.

Location: WWF European Policy Office in Brussels


Main responsibilities:

Policy and Advocacy:  

  • Maintain professional knowledge and keep abreast of emerging issues in the area of EU and global anti-IUU policies (including the promotion of monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) and seafood traceability), and in particular of issues surrounding the implementation of the 
    • EU IUU Regulation and related regulations and instruments.
    • Identify opportunities at the EU level and in international fora such as Regional Fisheries Management Organisations, as well as in non-EU countries, to take forward WWF’s priorities with respect to fisheries governance and management, MCS, Catch Documentation Schemes (CDS) and seafood traceability best practices.
    • Develop policies and positions on behalf of WWF in these areas of expertise, working in close cooperation with relevant WWF staff. 
    • Help represent WWF in relevant fora and with relevant stakeholders (especially seafood industry actors in the Market Advisory Council) to promote those policies and positions and to achieve concrete gains for WWF’s marine conservation agenda.
     
    Network Coordination:
    • Enhance the impacts of EPO’s IUU related work through effective coordination of activities with relevant WWF offices within the EU and across the globe.
    • Coordinate WWF network inputs into EU policy-making relating to fisheries governance and management, MCS, and seafood traceability.
    • Coordinate WWF’s EU level work on IUU fishing with partner NGOs.
    • What you need:

      Required Qualifications 
      • Degree or advanced technical qualifications relevant to the field of fisheries governance, fisheries monitoring, control, and surveillance, and/or seafood traceability.
      • At least 8 years professional experience including policy advocacy in Europe.
       
      Required Skills and Competencies
      • Strong analytical and policy advocacy skills.
      • Strong communications, facilitation and interpersonal skills.
      • Strong networking and team building skills appropriate for a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
      • Proven ability to act as organizational spokesperson and interact effectively with government representatives; significant experience interacting with seafood industry would be a strong advantage.
      • Excellent written and spoken English; other languages (especially French and/or Spanish) would be an advantage.
      • An understanding of the role and culture of NGOs.
      • Knowledge of the EU political system and EU institutions.
