Background:

We wish to appoint a Site Manager to be responsible for the woods we own in North East and Mid Wales (Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham, north Powys and Ceredigion), and including our Visitor Improvement Project site Plas Power Woods. You will have a passion for woodland and previous experience in land or forestry management that enables you to represent and deliver the Trust’s vision for the woods that we own. You will have the ability to deliver inspirational community engagement and visitor experience at key sites.  You will have an awareness of how to meet the requirements of working in a bilingual environment. Your focus will be on supporting colleagues and leading service providers to deliver a complex and extensive work programme, including responsibility for planning and managing an annual budget in excess of £100,000.  

You will work from a home office convenient for the efficient management of a large geographical area, for which office equipment will be provided. Extensive travel will be necessary for which a lease car will be provided and is available for private use.

Summary of Job:

To manage Woodland Trust (WT) sites to deliver the maximum benefit for the Trusts aims as outlined in its Strategic Plan.

Duties:

To ensure the prioritisation and implementation of activities on the trust sites in your care. This will lead to concentration of your time and financial resources on those higher priority sites which best demonstrate and deliver on the WT vision and aims and spending les resource on those that do not fit.
To achieve the targets discussed and agreed with line managers, based on corporate, department and country plans.
To evaluate, prepare and implement management plans for the WT sites in your care, in line with the WT’s woodland management and conservation approach, people engagement principles and H&S requirements.
The planning, implementation and prudent financial management of a budgeted programme of site management works using agents, contractors and volunteers, including involving local people and the public in the care and management of Trust sites.
To maximise the income and grant aid potential of work programmes.
To maximise the opportunity for visitor engagement, community and volunteer engagement at key sites
To assist with the production of information about sites to ensure that the estate fulfils its communication potential to a variety of target audiences.
Project manage our new Visitor Improvement Programme at appropriate sites in your care, leading a cross functional team of people engagement specialists, communications specialists and funders.
Involve local people and the public in the care and management of WT sites, including event management.
Liaison with neighbours, the public and local and statutory authorities on matters relating to site management.
On issues relating to the estate to represent the WT to outside organisations, individuals and the general public and to raise the profile and professional standing of the WT.
To evaluate, identify and lead the transfer of sites to third parties where they are more appropriately managed by others
To assist other staff in delivering the WTs business and project plans on the WT estate by for example supporting funding bids, corporate events and VIP visits
To implement WT Health and Safety policy on sites, including risk assessments, implementation of work and appropriate recording.
To promote the WT and its activities, especially to nearby communities and to interested stakeholder groups
As priorities and time allow support the outreach advice and partnership activity of the Trust
Qualities Required:

Self aware - You will be able to demonstrate a willingness to develop your own skills and help develop those around you.
Collaborative - Demonstrate the ability to work across multiple teams with a variety of skills
Results focused - You will be able to prioritise and act with determination to achieve targets
Knowledge Required:

Specialist Knowledge Extensive knowledge and experience of forestry or conservation land management including experience of volunteer and community engagement. A sound understanding of practical issues faced when managing woodlands
IT literate, preferably with MS Office experience
Experience Required:
Project management Extensive experience of leading complex, multi disciplinary projects bringing together a variety of skills from both within and outside the organisation to plan, monitor and deliver projects on time and to budget.
Forestry or conservation land management experience, including experience of volunteer and community engagement
Welsh language Knowledge of how to meet the requirements of working in a bilingual environment. A working ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable.

Qualifications Required:

Qualified to HND/degree level in forestry, land management or related field is desirable
A full driving licence and ability to undertake travel across a wide area, sometimes to remote locations. Overnight stays will be required

This post is home based. You will be expected to provide a suitable environment in which to create an office within your region. All necessary office equipment will be provided.
