Are you looking for a new challenge? Are you passionate about working with people to protect our planet and create a green and peaceful future? Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced human resources professional to lead the People and Culture unit supporting our 70 staff across Canada.

Job Title: Head of People and Culture
Location: Montreal or Toronto 
Reports to: Executive Director

Reporting to the Executive Director your role would be to design and manage the strategy and delivery of programs to support and develop the staff across Greenpeace Canada in an enabling work culture; and to provide expert advice to Greenpeace Canada managers and staff on human resources legislation, policies and best practice.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Working proactively with managers to ensure effective workforce planning and talent management in relation to the organizational strategies.
  2. Work with GPC leadership and staff in the adoption of a healthy and compassionate work culture including a global mindset, and support for our values of independence, internationalism, non-violence and ecology.
  3. Manage the development, implementation and communication of Greenpeace human resources policies, procedures and systems and processes consistent with global Greenpeace standards and in compliance with current Federal/Provincial legislative requirements.
  4. Provide expert advice and guidance to the Executive Director, the Directors and unit heads on human resources policy and staffing matters.
  5. Ensure that staff, including Greenpeace International Staff working in Canada, has access to information, advice and guidance related to their rights, responsibilities, benefits and entitlements.
  6. Manage compensation, benefits and job evaluation systems.
  7. Ensure effective management of union relations, negotiations and collective agreements with the Toronto staff union.
  8. Ensure effective recruitment and hiring processes for all national staff job vacancies.
  9. Ensure an effective performance management system is in place including providing training, direction and advice to management on performance monitoring and evaluation processes and procedures. 
  10. Supervise the work of the HR Assistant and oversee the effective documentation and retention of all Greenpeace Canada HR and personnel files and records.
  11. Participate in the global Greenpeace community on relevant projects, shared learning and global standards development.

Required skills and experience:

  • At least six years in a senior human resources role, ideally with experience in labour relations
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit organization
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well and build relationships with all levels of staff, in Canada and internationally
  • Personal values alignment with Greenpeace’s values and activism, support Greenpeace’s mission and campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience. 
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • CHRP designation preferred
  • Fluency in English and French required

You will work with colleagues in Canada and around the world. The ability to work weekends and evenings is sometimes required.
