Green Access Development Officer

A great opportunity has arisen to join the Suffolk County Council's Suffolk Green Access team as a Green Access Development Officer. You will be based at our Headquarters in Ipswich, but you will cover all of Suffolk. The job has hybrid working options including some working from home.

Your role

• identify, scope, negotiate and deliver projects that improve the green access network
• lead on the enhancement and protection of walking and cycling access funded from income, especially from housing and other developments
• project manage the complete delivery of green access schemes including managing budgets and seeking financial contributions through the planning system
• attend meetings to communicate with key stakeholders on the progress of schemes
• you will work closely as one team within the Rights of Way and Access Team.

Your responsibilities

This role is very varied and will involve working across Suffolk in a wide variety of locations. Typical day-to-day tasks will include responding to a planning consultation, scoping a new green access project on the ground, implementing a project where funding has been secured, developing a works specification, meeting a landowner or contractor, signing off a project, or compiling a report on the delivery of concurrent schemes.

You will need:

• excellent project management skills
• proven networking, negotiating and influencing skills
• experience of the role green access plays in health and carbon reduction outcomes
• an understanding of the impact large projects and developments have on green access.

The team

• the Rights of Way and Access team looks after the county council’s green access network. Green access includes 5,700km of public rights of way, open access and informal routes. Suffolk County Council’s ‘Suffolk Green Access Strategy 2020-2030’ covers the team’s main priorities with the vision “to get more people using and enjoying Suffolk’s green access network.”
• the Green Access Team sits within Rights of Way and Access with the specific role of developing and promoting green access through capital investment projects, high profile media engagement and delivering the annual Suffolk Walking Festival.

Travel requirements

Frequent Travel Essential - We positively encourage the use of technology to communicate, but in this role, you will need to travel to locations away from your contractual base, so you must either hold a full and current driving licence and have access to personal transport or meet the mobility requirements of the role through other reasonable and suitable means. This will include accessing remote sites over rough terrain inaccessible to vehicles.
