Ducks Unlimited, the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats, seeks an experienced and motivated communications professional to lead our public policy office’s advocacy communications and public outreach efforts. The selected individual will create and implement a national media plan to achieve policy objectives; establish media relationships and place stories in national and regional print and broadcast media; serve as the point of contact for information requests and interviews and coordinate on other communications projects with regional colleagues. Candidates must be highly motivated and have 3+ years hands-on experience in communications. Must be able to conceive plans and strategies, possess very strong writing skills and manage distribution of communications materials to the highest professional standard. Knowledge of congressional process and congressional press corps, as well as familiarity with wildlife- and sportsmen-related conservation issues a strong plus. Position reports to DU’s Director of Communications, but will work in and coordinate daily with the Director of the Governmental Affairs Office.
Responsibilities:
Create, implement and expand strategic communications plan to support and reach national policy goals.
Administer grassroots outreach plan to encourage activity from strong volunteer membership.
Author and manage nationally distributed weekly conservation policy newsletter.
Coordinate with national and regional communications staff to further public policy objectives.
Develop media relations with market reporters; responsible for placement of stories in national, regional and local print and broadcast.
Coordinate communication efforts between congressional offices and our organization.
Pitch and respond to requests for media and interviews.
Monitor and report to an internal audience on relevant media activity.
Write and coordinate distribution of press releases, letters to the editor and other information and advocacy materials.
