Government Affairs Representative

Great Plains Region 

Ducks Unlimited is seeking an accomplished and dynamic individual to help support public policy efforts across our seven-state region: the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.  The position may be stationed in the Great Plains Regional Office in Bismarck, ND, but individuals deemed to have sufficient experience and qualifications could also be stationed in either Grand Island, NE, or Fort Collins, CO.  This position will provide support for guiding the collective policy work of various stakeholders (e.g., DU volunteers, state agencies, conservation organizations) across the Great Plains Region.

Specific Duties: 

  • Work closely with DU staff and volunteers at the local, regional and state level as a public policy representative on waterfowl-friendly conservation policies within the seven-state region.
  • Provide leadership and representation for DU’s conservation goals and interests in diverse settings with state policy makers.
  • Represent the interests of DU and its members in state legislative and regulatory proceedings across the seven-state region.
  • Support DU’s federal policy goals by working with staff, volunteers and in-state congressional staff.
  • Think both analytically and creatively in developing and implementing current and new conservation policy in agricultural and energy-producing landscapes.
  • Work with traditional conservation partners as well as new, nontraditional partners in building support for waterfowl-friendly conservation policy initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in public policy development and execution, law, government relations, campaigns or other advocacy. 
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, public policy or other appropriate field.  An advanced degree is desirable.
  • Ability to travel frequently and work effectively away from home or office.
  • Strong writing and oral communications skills.
  • Experience in crafting legislation and leading bi-partisan advocacy efforts with broad stakeholder groups.
  • Understanding of campaign organization and execution.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills 

This position reports to the Director of Public Policy for the Great Plains Region.
