We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally. Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe. Summary job descriptionWe are recruiting an expert to lead our work on gender equity in small-scale fisheries and marine conservation, with an initial focus on our programmes in southwest Madagascar. The position will lead on promoting gender equity throughout our technical functions and global network of sites, including embedding consideration of gender within programme design, research and learning, and capacity building. This will include supporting colleagues, partners and communities to apply gender mainstreaming principles and tools into the design, monitoring and adaptation of programming. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that Blue Ventures’ work is at the forefront of best practice in the sector as well as sharing and documenting learning and best practices. We are looking for a gender specialist with practical experience and a strong technical understanding of gender-mainstreaming approaches, ideally in a context of community-based development and marine/fisheries resource management. They will have an understanding of social equity and how this links to gender equity, and be experienced at working in collaboration with local teams to respond to different gender and social dynamics. The successful candidate will have a deep and sensitive appreciation of the complex challenges facing remote and rural tropical coastal communities; including widespread poverty, high vulnerability to climate change, gender inequality, an overwhelming reliance on fishing livelihoods for food and income, data deficiency, and weak national governance. They will be closely aligned with Blue Ventures’ core values and mission to support community-based approaches to marine conservation. This role is open to applicants who can work from any of our global offices in countries where Blue Ventures is able to employ staff. Regular overseas travel to work with partners and field teams will be a central part of the job. |
