The Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP) is an international nonprofit organization that works to reduce the environmental impacts of energy-using products as the primary resource for appliance energy efficiency standards and labeling (S&L) worldwide. CLASP organizes teams of local and international experts to provide best practice technical advice to governments and organizations working to develop energy efficiency S&L policies. CLASP's projects result in major improvements in the energy efficiency of appliances, lighting, and equipment; enhanced institutional capacity to develop energy efficiency S&L policies and programs at local, regional, and international levels; considerable reductions in electricity consumption; and significant abatement of greenhouse gas emissions.

Global Research Manager

The Global Research Manager w ill coordinate CLASP’s technical and policy analysis of energy-using products. S/he will serve as an integral member of CLASP’s research team in the development, management, and implementation of CLASP’s cross-cutting programmatic work and global research from conception through policy engagement. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the technical aspects of energy efficient appliances and equipment, and a strong record in the design, analysis, and/or testing of those products, including energy efficiency aspects. The ideal candidate will also have a strong background in the policy governing energy-using products, excellent communication skills, and experience managing people and research for a growing, global organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Global Research Manager will serve as a key technical resource, assist with program budgets and administration, and help manage CLASP’s external partnerships.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Global Research Manager will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

  • In coordination with the Technical Director, guide the efforts of the Global Research Program team to ensure that high impact S&L programs are implemented around the world.
  • In coordination with the Technical Director, serve as the main point of contact for technical support questions from CLASP country programs and partners within the ClimateWorks Network.
  • Provide day-to-day management of CLASP’s Global Research Program, supervising, guiding, and supporting a small team of research assistants and associates and managing external contractors.
  • Provide technical support on data collection, impact assessment, and potentials forecasting for CLASP’s country programs, regional programs and cross-cutting initiatives, including global research, benchmarking, and product initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of or provide input on annual strategic plans and budgets.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with NGOs, governments, and donors, where appropriate.
  • Regularly represent CLASP’s Global Research Program team at government and stakeholder
    meetings in various international locations, as well as at regular meetings with a wide base of international contractors to further the implementation and sustainability of program activities.
  • Provide leadership, management, and strategic direction for program activities to ensure the efficient use of resources and achievement of organizational goals.
  • Ensure effective planning, management, and timely implementation of program activities in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain close working relationships with stakeholders and partners.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • 8+ years of work experience with a minimum of 5 years experience working either in technical or policy analysis of energy-using products; experience as a technical expert or researcher on energy efficient products and/or as a policy or program expert for energy efficient products preferred
  • Graduate degree in a suitable field (e.g., environmental science or engineering) or equivalent professional/academic experience
  • Background or a demonstrated interest in energy efficiency issues and/or the environmental impact of products
  • Excellent analytical skills and proven ability to write clear and concise reports or briefings in English
  • Strong management skills; demonstrated ability to manage research teams, projects, and contractors and develop strong relationships with stakeholders
  • Familiarity with product policy for energy-using products; the analytical, modeling, and policy tools applied in market transformation policy; and the role of governments in product policy
  • An understanding of government energy efficiency and/or environmental policy required; understanding of the policy tools applied in standards and labels development a plus
  • Demonstrated experience planning and managing projects to produce agreed-upon deliverables, on time and within budget
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, and a professional manner
