About the Organization
The Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP) is an international nonprofit organization that works to reduce the environmental impacts of energy-using products as the primary resource for appliance energy efficiency standards and labeling (S&L) worldwide. CLASP organizes teams of local and international experts to provide best practice technical advice to governments and organizations working to develop energy efficiency S&L policies. CLASP's projects result in major improvements in the energy efficiency of appliances, lighting, and equipment; enhanced institutional capacity to develop energy efficiency S&L policies and programs at local, regional, and international levels; considerable reductions in electricity consumption; and significant abatement of greenhouse gas emissions.

Global Research Associate 
The Global Research Associate will support the Global Research Manager in coordinating CLASP’s technical and policy analysis of energy-using products. S/he will serve as an integral member of CLASP’s research team in the design, management, and implementation of CLASP’s cross-cutting programmatic work and global research through policy engagement. The Global Research Associate will have a background and demonstrated interest in the policy aspects of energy efficient appliances and equipment, including the development and implementation of energy or environmental policies governing products, and the application of analytical tools in market transformation strategies. The ideal candidate will also have experience working in energy efficiency policy or a related field, and possess excellent communication skills as well as a strong background in analysis, research, and writing. The Global Research Associate will report to the Global Research Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Global Research Associate will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Provide technical support on data collection, impact assessment, and potentials forecasting for CLASP’s country programs, regional programs, and cross-cutting initiatives, including global research, benchmarking, and product initiatives.
  • Conduct technical and/or policy research, and analyze technical data for residential and commercial appliances and/or market transformation studies aimed at standards and labeling improvements.
  • Perform comprehensive market and technology assessments of appliances.
  • Develop database applications, as needed.
  • Develop quantitative and analytical tools, including complex spreadsheets for energy and economic analysis.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with NGOs, governments, and donors, where appropriate.
  • Represent CLASP’s Global Research Program team at regular meetings with a wide base of international contractors to further the implementation and sustainability of program activities.
  • Support effective planning, management, and timely implementation of program activities in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional/academic experience in environmental policy/sciences, engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of work experience either in the energy or environmental sector, preferably with (i) technical or policy analysis of energy-using products, (ii) experience as a technical expert or researcher on energy efficient products, and/or (iii) as a policy or program expert for energy efficient products
  • Background or a demonstrated familiarity with energy efficiency technologies and/or the environmental impact of products
  • Familiarity with product policy for energy-using products; the analytical, modeling, and policy tools applied in market transformation policy; and the role of governments in product policy
  • An understanding of government energy efficiency and/or environmental policy required; understanding of the policy tools applied in standards and labels development a plus
  • A personal orientation that emphasizes best practice regardless of the source and teamwork ahead of getting credit
  • Excellent analytical skills and proven ability to write clear and concise reports or briefings in English
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, and a professional manner
  • Experience working in an international and multicultural environment

CLASP offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. This position will be based in Washington, DC, with travel to global CLASP offices and elsewhere as necessary.
