Also Listing:
Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

Based within the IceSheet program at our Cambridge office you will be a part of a team working on the NERC project ‘Ice shelves in a warming world: Filchner Ice Shelf system, Antarctica’.

You will use state-of-the art numerical flow models to simulate the effect of ocean ties on ice-stream flow and to determine the mechanical interaction between floating and grounded ice. Your modelling work will aim at determining the nature of basal control on ice flow upstream from the grounding line. In addition to the modelling work, you will be responsible for preparing and doing field observations in Antarctica, collecting GPS data on ice-stream and ice-shelf motion. You will use the data collected to validate your numerical model and to test hypothesis about basal sliding.

Qualifications: You will have a Ph.D in the earth sciences (for example glaciology, oceanography), physics or mathematics, some prior experience in running numerical models, and good programming skills (for example Matlab or Python).

Duration: The position is a full-time fixed position of 36 month duration with an expected start date of 1st September 2015.

Salary: Salary will be in the range of £26,715 to £30,000 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave
