Key Performance Areas:
• Natural resources management that includes the implementation of invasive plant, alien animal, unnatural soil erosion and rehabilitation management programs. • Monitoring and recording of resource management data and facilitation of external research. • Human resources management and administration including the supervision of volunteers and contractors who provide conservation management services to the Estate. • Identification and implementation of personnel development and skills training. • Road maintenance, footpath and track management including signage. • Fire management, including wild fires and prescribed burns. • Law enforcement – including participation in regular patrols (on foot and per vehicle), applying, administrating and enforcing regulations within the boundaries of the Forest Estate. • Visitor Management – including safety and security of visitors, control of visitors’ behaviour and recording, interpretation and dissemination of information. • Management of recreational facilities and destinations. • Maintenance of equipment, vehicles and infrastructure. • Development of sound and mutually beneficial relationships with Estate users, neighbouring communities, NGO’s, Local Government and other associated organizations and individuals. • Financial administration, including an understanding of SANParks procurement procedures. • Management of cultural historic nodes. • Implementation and administration of approved conservation policy according to agreed management and operational plans, as well as stipulations of relevant legislation. • Regular standby duty. • Timber harvesting and all relevant activities according to prescribed policies. • All the above must conform to FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) prescriptions, norms and standards.
Requirements • National Diploma in Forestry or equivalent Diploma or degree supported by at least 3 years practical experience. • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially MS Word, Excel and Power point • Code 08 driver’s license. • Accommodation is available in the Estate and it will be expected of the Forester to stay on the Estate.
