Description

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is an agency of the Scottish Government and manages the National Forest Estate (NFE) on behalf of the Scottish Ministers.

South Region is one of five within FLS that delivers the management of the NFE and covers the some of the most beautiful scenery from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean across to the wilds of the East, North Sea.

Timber production is a key target and the region currently produce just over 1 million m3 per year. Production on the island is in the region of 80k/m3 and set to rise to 120k/m3.

This forms part of a major supply to a range of wood processing companies across Central/Southern Scotland and North England.

Forest management and stewardship activities include restocking of approximately 100 - 120 ha per year. Maintenance of a wide range of visitor facilities, routes and supporting the delivery of Environmental and Conservation projects.

FLS are currently in an exciting period of change and are looking for motivated, enthusiastic people who are keen to join and contribute to its management objectives of the NFE and take us forward into the 21st century.

We have 2 vacancies available. 1 x Forest Management and Stewardship Forester based in Newton Stewart, 1 x Standing Sales, Harvesting & Marketing Forester based in Newton Stewart.

Job description

Contribute to the South Region financial plan be delivering forest management and stewardship programmes including management of operations, contracts and budgets to organisational and UK Woodland Assurance (UKWAS) Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a safety-first culture in all aspects of the role.
  • Support, manage and develop Pay Band 6a supervisor.
  • Support and utilise the FM/Stewardship PB6b staff when required.
  • Plan, prepare and manage Land Management Plans to meet both FLS and Scottish Forestry approval.
  • Manage and monitor harvesting, forest management and stewardship operations for the beat as part of the wider regional plan and budget.
  • Establish and maintain good lines of communications with internal and external stakeholders to ensure common goals are met.
  • Prepare information for annual financial plan, carryout in year financial monitoring, providing detailed and accurate information to the HM, FM, Stewardship Manager as required.

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

People working with government assets must complete basic personnel security standard checks.
