Description

Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced forest campaigner to work on our Great Bear Rainforest campaign in British Columbia. The focus of this campaign is to ensure permanent protection of the largest coastal temperate rainforest in the world, to shift forestry towards more sustainable logging practices and to strengthen communities in a conservation-based economy. This will be accomplished, in part, through education, advocacy and solutions-based work with provincial and First Nations governments, the forest industry and their customers. Additionally, the successful candidate will engage as a Greenpeace representative to the Rainforest Solutions Project (RSP), a joint-initiative of Greenpeace, ForestEthics and Sierra Club BC that promotes conservation and economic alternatives to industrial logging on British Columbia's central and north coasts, and Haida Gwaii.

Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Working with and lobbying senior government, industry and First Nations leaders to implement lasting solutions for the Great Bear Rainforest;
  • Engaging with First Nations’ communities to support the implementation of land use agreements at a local level;
  • Implementing public engagement strategies to raise awareness of the Great Bear Rainforest;
  • Acting as a spokesperson to the media and at public events;
  • Managing and supervising contractors as required;
  • Other duties as required.

Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of campaign experience, and a proven record on developing and implementing successful campaign strategies. You must be able to manage a diverse range of responsibilities under dynamic circumstances while at the same time as keeping focused campaign goals and objectives.

The successful candidate will have excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, have strong negotiation skills, be able to work both as part of a team as well as independently, and be able to demonstrate good judgment and leadership under pressure.

Desired experience and abilities include:

  • Experience working on environmental advocacy campaigns, preferably forest-related, with a demonstrated ability to develop strategic and annual work-plans;
  • Knowledge of BC forestry issues, resource management and land use planning from a policy and operational perspective;
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in resource management, forest conservation or other relevant fields;
  • Experience working with First Nations and resource-based communities;
  • Demonstrated research, analytical, and writing skills;
  • Able to work within a dynamic fully-integrated coalition environment.

You will work with colleagues in Canada and around the world and you must be able to travel, including internationally. The ability to work weekends and evenings is sometimes required.

Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign style, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience. An ability to communicate in French and English is a strong asset.
