The Food Connections Project is focused on rebuilding the necessary skills we need to fully enjoy the food that is grown here.  This project aims to increase our abilities to cook seasonally; to can, freeze, and store food for the winter; to take advantage of win-win relationships between farmers and consumers; to celebrate and enjoy our harvest. We are hiring a summer student who will work closely with the Food Connections Project Coordinator to develop and deliver these Food Action Committee programs.  Please note: this position will require some weekend and evening work.

The Food Connections Summer Student's duties include:

  • Assisting the Food Connections Coordinator in organizing cooking and preserving workshops (e.g. advertising, running registration, procuring workshop materials, follow up surveys);
  • Running demonstrations at farmers markets and community events on home preserving techniques;
  • Researching a variety of topics, including cold storage and other low energy food preservation methods;
  • Contributing articles to the Food Action Committee blog;
  • Assisting with ongoing project evaluation;
  • Supporting the work of the Food Action Committee and the Ecology Action Centre.

 
Required skills and experience:

  • Strong knowledge of and skills in food preparation and preservation
  • Good communication skills, able to seek out assistance and feedback
  • Enjoy working with people, able to facilitate large groups and conflict resolution
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills

 
Desirable skills:

  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Drivers license
  • Knowledge of local food, food security and food politics

 
Important note: Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary education and returning to full-time studies in the following school year. A graduating high school student in the program year, who can provide a letter of acceptance for attendance as a full-time student at a post-secondary institution in the next school year, may also be considered.

35 hours per week @ $13.50/hr
