Field Surveyor (Eighteen surveyors based exclusively in Wales and four across Great Britain)

PURPOSE OF THE POST

UKCEH are looking for eighteen experienced field surveyors to work on large-scale, long-term field studies to assess change in the British Countryside. The role demands a high level of flexibility regarding location as surveyors will be expected to travel throughout Wales and/or wider Great Britain for the duration of the contract. Initial appointments will be from April 2020 for a period up to 5 months.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• To identify and record higher plant species and bryophytes in a variety of plots across a range of habitats.
• To collect soil samples and other environmental data as required.
• To map landscape features of predetermined one kilometre squares using bespoke GIS and surveying software.

SKILLS/ KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Successful candidates will require;

• Excellent general botanical identification skills and the ability to recognize broad and priority habitats with experience of a range of ecological census technique.
• Able to carry field equipment in remote locations and rugged terrain.
• Willingness to work outside of standard working hours and a flexible approach to travel during the working week.
• Competent driving skills are essential, including a clean driving license. 4X4 vehicle experience is highly desirable.
• IT literate and some experience of GIS software is highly desirable, however full training will be provided.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills
• Attention to detail

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The basic working week will be 37 hours. However, the role demands a high level of flexibility regarding location as surveyors will be expected to travel throughout Great Britain for the duration of the contract.

The surveyors appointed will work in teams of two. Twelve of the posts will be located exclusively in Wales and four more widely across Great Britain. The posts will be managed by the field survey management team at CEH Bangor.

This role is a Short Term Appointment of five months (April 2020 – September 2020)
