Description

WWF seeks a Field Manager responsible for project implementation across these field stations, primarily by strengthening local capacity to implement multiple field projects on-the-ground within the Lac Tumba landscape. He/She will guide locally based teams to develop, implement, and monitor workplan activities in a timely manner; effectively engage with key stakeholders from provincial and territory authorities to local chiefs and villagers; and act as a liaison with the national WWF office in Kinshasa.

The position will be based in the Lac Tumba landscape in the DRC with frequent travel across the landscape.  Exact location is negotiable.

Key responsibilities will include:   

  • Field Office oversight:  Oversees field project activities in accordance with the project description, work plan, budget and contractual agreements. Works with Program Manager on development of work plans, focusing on implementation with field staff and key partners. Ensures that projects are coordinated in the field, logistically supported, and making progress towards their objectives.
  • Project implementation:  Directs project teams using a participatory, adaptive management approach, focusing on Ngiri and Malebo base station activities.  Ensures smooth functioning of field offices.  Supervises project activities and provide technical oversight.
  • Capacity building:  Coach and mentor field staff in project implementation based on WWF’s standards for Program/Project management, including conservation planning, workplan implementation, and reporting.
  • Finance and Administrative management:  Working with finance and logistical support staff as well as the Lac Tumba Program Manager, ensures solid implementation of financial management systems in the field to support project activities. 

 

Minimum Work Requirements:

The ideal Project Manager will have: strong field experience, knowledge of forest and wildlife management and ecology; rural development and/or community-based natural resource management experience; experience with the challenges of field work in Africa (prior experience within central Africa preferred); familiarity with conservation and development issues; and willingness to live and work in remote areas.  

The Project Manager should have the following skills and experience:

  • A minimum of a Master’s in natural resource management, ecology, community development or a related field with at least 4-5 years of working experience in the fields of conservation or development.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of forest and wildlife ecology, natural resource management principles, community-based natural resource management and rural livelihood issues.
  • Proven ability and commitment to manage, mentor and develop multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams and individuals.
  • Ability to work in remote areas and under difficult conditions with demonstrated creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent people and project management skills to handle complex, multi-faceted projects. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for working with local stakeholders (including customary chiefs and local villagers, mentoring staff, hosting donor field trips, and writing reports.
  • Strong skills in French and English (Lingala a plus)
