Background
Cleaning up the environment usually isn’t hard to figure out how to do – we know what it will take. And most people strongly support measures to protect our air quality, improve water quality, and preserve open spaces.

The hard part is convincing decision makers that it’s worth the effort. To do that, we need to go down two paths at the same time – getting citizens together to make their voices heard and arguing the merits of the issues directly with decision makers.

Environment Maryland has an open position for a Field Director who would focus on environmental policy in Maryland, especially in the areas of global warming, suburban sprawl, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Job Description
The Field Director will develop campaigns to require automakers to sell more low-emission vehicles, reduce the amount of waste burned in incinerators, limit water pollution, promote development policies that result in walkable, healthy communities, and work on the implementation of our recent victories in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water quality protection.

On a day-to-day basis, the Field Director will do the following:
Campaign Strategy: Create a plan to win on our environmental campaigns; strategize how to gain political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing, media publicity, endorsements, and message development.

Media Outreach: Serve as the public spokesperson for our environmental campaigns—through media events, press releases, editorial board meetings, and other publicity tactics.

Direct Advocacy: Meeting with decision-makers to promote solutions—including state legislators, agency staff, and local officials.

Fundraising: Write grant proposals, meet with foundation representatives, provide updates to large donors, and develop materials to build membership.

Location
Baltimore, with frequent travel to Annapolis. Environment Maryland has offices in Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington, D.C.

Qualifications
Must be deeply passionate about protecting the environment. Must be persistent in the face of challenges. We're looking for someone with leadership skills and initiative, and the verbal and written skills necessary to make the case that protecting the environment must be a top priority. Candidates should have 3 to 8 years of relevant professional experience, post-college, including (but not limited to) work in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or government settings.

Salary and Benefits
Salary for this position is commensurate with relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees. A competitive benefits package includes health care coverage, educational loan assistance, a retirement plan, and paid vacation and sick days.
