The East Coast Environmental Law Association (ECELAW) is seeking a new Executive Director. ECELAW is a not-for-profit environmental law organization based in Halifax. ECELAW was formed: to assist community and environmental groups in the Atlantic region of Canada by providing information about environmental law; to provide clinical environmental law opportunities for law students; and to support initiatives to improve environmental laws in Canada and the Atlantic Provinces.

ECELAW envisions a future in which everyone contributes to the creation and effective use of local, provincial, federal and international laws to transform this region into an international leader in environmental protection, quality of life, sustainability and long-term prosperity. ECELAW's mission is to provide legal advice to individuals and organizations to ensure environmental laws are effectively used. ECELAW also conducts research and offers advice on how to improve environmental laws that affect this region. Qualifications and Experience

The Executive Director will be the key player responsible for establishing the organization's operations and initiating its programs in accordance with the policies and directives established by the Board of Directors and the Executive. The ideal candidate will have:

• management and organizational skills/experience;
• strong communication skills;
• experience with public relations (i.e. media);
• interest in environmental law;
• knowledge of environmental issues;
• the ability to work independently and take initiative;
• experience with program development and fundraising;
• the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;
• the ability to delegate and work effectively with volunteer committees;
• the ability to work in collaborative multi-stakeholder settings
• proficiency with office and information technologies; and
• the skills and interest to build an organization from the ground up.

Job Description

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall development, management, administration, representation and organization of all activities, initiatives, programs and affairs including but not limited to the following:

• Law & advocacy - program planning and implementation;
• Communications and public relations;
• Operations and administration;
• Governance and strategic planning (working with the Board of Directors);
• Financial management;
• Human resources – staff and student management and supervision; and
• Fundraising – development and generation of revenue.

Of these key areas of responsibility, applicants should have at least one area of clear expertise and should demonstrate the basic skills needed and motivation and interest to develop the other areas of expertise needed.

In order to effectively perform and accomplish these duties, the Executive Director will ensure that necessary staff, organizational structures, resources, and systems and procedures are in place. The Executive Director will act within the policies and guidelines established by the Board of Directors and will seek appropriate approvals, guidance or policy directives from the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will report to the Chair or Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors.

Location and Salary Range

Location of work is in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Salary will depend on education and experience. Anticipated range is $50,000 to $60,000.
