Education Schools Assistant
BirdLife Malta is looking for one full-time Education Schools Assistant to inspire, involve and educate people about birds and the natural world, with a particular focus on school-age children and their families.
You will support the administration and delivery of BirdLife Malta’s education work in schools - including our Dinja Wahda programme, school visits to our nature reserves, development of wildlife gardens in schools, and other projects as they are developed.
In addition, you will be responsible for conducting research about our education programmes.
You will also support the wider work of the education team including community engagement, project-based work and resource development.
You will be an ambassador for BirdLife Malta in schools ensuring as many children as possible are involved in our education programme and aware of our work.
Are you:
- Aged 18-30
- A citizen of one of these partner and programme countries: Italy, Spain, UK, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Jordan, and Turkey
- Outgoing, friendly, sociable, and keen to experience a different culture
- Organised and pay attention to detail
- Able to demonstrate a high standard of customer services towards our partner schools
- Willing to develop administration, time management, numeracy, and interpersonal skills
- Willing to learn with an adaptable approach in line with the needs of a charitable organisation’s structure, including working flexible and occasional long hours
The Erasmus+ Volunteering programme will provide you with:
- Accommodation in a shared room close to our offices in Ta’ Xbiex or with host families
- Coverage of all living costs such as electricity, water, gas, and internet
- Reimbursement of the flight and other transport costs (bus, train, metro, visa) up to a certain limit
- €300 monthly allowance
- Private CIGNA insurance
Description of duties:
There is the opportunity for the volunteer to gain a wide range of experience and skills across the organisation. Specific duties for this position are as follows:
Erasmus Project (One World Learning)
- Assist and participate in discussions regarding the integration of the new primary schools programme
General BirdLife Malta education research
Collect monthly engagement data from BirdLife Malta field teaching
Assist with evaluating the success of different activities and finding solutions how to improve
Dinja Wahda Primary (BirdLife Malta’s education programme)
- Acquire knowledge of the education programme and the schools involved
- Acquire knowledge of the Dinja Wahda Action Guide and the process by which schools are engaged
- Build and maintain good relationships with school management, administration and Dinja Wahda coordinators within the school
- Maintain up to date schools contact database and Dinja Wahda coordinator lists (especially after summer when teachers may move schools)
- Receive feedback forms and input the information onto the database, including point allocation and review
- Maintain regular contact with schools including: advising on the visit timetable of the schools coordinator and updating schools when necessary, answering questions about the activities and providing additional resources
- Encourage, facilitate and support teacher’s work in connection with issues related to the Dinja Wahda programme
- Receive feedback forms and input the information onto the database, including point allocation and review
- Administration for Foster a Forest or Join the Club. Ensure school membership packs (joining gift of books) are passed on to the schools coordinator for distribution
- Send termly updates to each school participating listing their current points and involvement
- Assist with the review of current resources including sending a questionnaire to teachers and compiling results
- Assist with the development of new activities during the summer review
Contribute to the planning of events including the annual Launch and Prize-Giving event and Walk for Nature, ensuring school involvement and participation
- Assist with judging activities when necessary
- Attend and support the delivery of Dinja Wahda events in schools where possible
- Compile regular (at least termly) e-newsletters to be sent to all school contacts
- Assist the Education Manager with writing the end of year report for the Dinja Wahda programme
- Support with teacher training workshops
- Support development of programme to improve green space in school grounds
- Compile a photo archive of good pictures that can be used for press and presentations
- Manage the bookings for school visits to the nature reserves linked to Nature Watch and Green Talks within schools
Dinja Wahda Secondary
- Promote bookings for secondary field teaching and manage bookings
- Support development of programme to improve green space in school grounds
- Develop and pilot programme of debates within secondary schools
- Wider education team
- Support the work of the wider education team including schools programme and community engagement work
- Support the delivery of summer school programme at Malta National Aquarium
- Support the delivery of teacher training workshops and school events
Administration and office communication
- Regular meetings with the Education Manager to review progress and plan ahead
- Attend regular education meetings
- Compile an end of year report for volunteers
- Support the Education Manager with any additional administration tasks when requested
