Job description

What’s it about?

You will be working for a government agency at the forefront of environmental planning in the UK. Our projects are of national significance including wind and solar farms, pipelines, nuclear power, transport schemes and many more. This is your chance to be involved in shaping landscapes and communities in England using sustainable and environmentally conscious methods.

What will I do?

Our work is varied and will test your logic, problem solving skills and environmental knowledge. This includes assessing the impacts of development on environmental aspects such as marine and terrestrial ecology, air quality, climate change, water resources and flood risk, noise and vibration, land use, archaeology.

What about training?

You will have the opportunity to undertake sponsored training and network with like-minded professionals in the environmental sector. Sessions are run by Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and independent companies/professionals covering topics from Climate Change to Biodiversity Net Gain.

Who is eligible to apply?

You will be studying a relevant course, such as environmental science, environmental management, ecology, geography etc. and your degree must contain a placement year.

Office attendance

This role is contractually based at Temple Quay House, Bristol which is currently out of use due to undergoing refurbishment work. In the interim, we have the use of alternative office space in very close proximity to Bristol Temple Meads railway station. We recognise and value the mutual benefits of hybrid working and have a flexible approach to in person attendance, which can vary dependent on the requirements of individual business units - the details of which can be discussed with candidates if invited to attend an interview.

Person specification

Essential Criteria (What you are required to demonstrate): 

  • Sandwich year placement student on any environmental related course such as environmental science, environmental management, ecology or geography. 
  • Motivation to work in Environment Planning. 
  • Good time management and ability to manage own workload and prioritise conflicting priorities to deliver to agreed timescales Ability to analyse large volumes of information (written and numeric). 
  • A high standard of written and oral skills. 
  • IT literate with ability to work effectively across the Microsoft suite of applications. 
  • High attention to detail. 

Desirable Criteria (You don't need to demonstrate but would be a bonus): 

  • Experience of working in an administrative capacity in an operational delivery or customer service environment.
  • Basic knowledge of the Town and Country Planning Act (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017 and/or The Infrastructure Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017.
