Description

We are looking for an Energy and Carbon Analyst to join the Innovation Team. You will be working closely with different teams across BAS to help the organisation decarbonise its operation and assist in the delivery of the different carbon reduction strategies.

You will need excellent analytical abilities and previous experience in energy and carbon assessments. You will play a vital role in understanding and presenting data underpinning decisions for the Decarbonisation Management Group across energy, carbon and travel. You will be using the data for energy assessments and evaluations to diagnose issues and identify opportunities to reduce carbon. You will be working closely with the Estates engineers and facilities managers supporting and providing information for carbon reduction projects. You will be assessing the energy performance of buildings and the savings achieved following completion of interventions or carbon reduction projects.

Purpose

You will be analysing the energy, fuel, and carbon data and reporting on performance and carbon across all areas of BAS operations including Cambridge offices, Antarctic Research Stations, Ships, Aircraft and Business Travel. You will be leading on the BAS carbon accounting work and reporting internally and to the Natural Environment Research Council.

You will work in close cooperation with the Senior Carbon Manager to facilitate the BAS Net Zero transition focusing on carbon reduction in infrastructure, transport/logistics and supply chain.

You will also collaborate with the Environment team and the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme team and feed into committees and working groups particularly those with a focus on Net Zero/Sustainability.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with a wide range of staff including scientists, administrators and contractors.

You will be taking part and contributing to meetings with the Natural Environment Research Council and other Research organisations to share best practice and develop benchmarks. You will contribute to communicating the work undertaken at BAS as part of the Net Zero agenda to the wider polar community and the public.

Qualification

Energy/Sustainability/Engineering or other science related degree, or an equivalent level of knowledge and analytical skills gained through work experience at a similar level.

Duties

1. Carbon accounting and reporting - supporting growing demand for reporting

  • Collect and report carbon data related to BAS operations under Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 categories. Progress reporting on the various decarbonisation projects.
  • Extend existing reporting scope to Scope 3 emissions such as construction projects, chartered ships and aircraft, commercial freight, working from home and commuting to work and other high impact supply chain emissions.
  • Support the development of a methodology and implementation plan for Projects carbon assessment.
  • Contribute to wider reports

2. Energy/Carbon data management and analysis (Cambridge, Antarctic Stations, Ships, Aircraft, Travel data, Projects (construction + embodied carbon data))

  • Ensure proper operation of the systems used to obtain energy data, report on issues and work with the Engineering team to resolve them
  • Improve and automate data collection methods
  • Improve and ensure quality and accuracy of data
  • Produce dashboards, energy performance reports and graphics
  • Compare the actual energy consumption of new buildings, redevelopments and retrofit measures with that predicted
  • Participate / help investigations into any performance gap
  • Use the information from meters and other sources to audit building energy use and make recommendations for improvement.

3. Assist with the activities of the Decarbonisation Management Group

  • Develop an Energy Auditing Programme for all Antarctic Stations, Cambridge and SDA:
    • Prepare energy check lists
    • Do interviews with the users to understand energy use patterns
    • Deliver energy audits annually to identify opportunities for improvement
    • Train staff to deliver energy audits in Antarctica
  • Assist with the implementation of the BAS Travel strategy (travel data analysis, carbon budget allocation to teams, encourage teams to set targets)
  • Contribute to information gathering for feasibility studies and business cases
  • Update information on the Carbon Management Plan
  • Work together with high impact suppliers to help develop a plan for reducing emissions
  • Prepare information material for the BAS website and the BAS Digital Workspace (intranet)
  • Engage with BAS Staff and promote the Net Zero Carbon Strategy
  • Assist at workshops with different BAS groups or other stakeholders

4. Present your work in small groups and contribute to wider audience presentations
