Electrical Technician / Design Engineer

Member of OpenHydro’s electrical engineering team, working closely with mechanical engineering, manufacturing and projects departments.  Principally responsible for delivering the detailed design, assembly, wiring and testing of the electrical components within OpenHydro’s Open-Centre Turbine.  This will require the individual to be creative, yet practical, as well as rigorous in their approach to design and quality standards.  It is critical that the individual assuming the role is a true team-player, with an ability to pre-empt and support a broad range of tasks.  Flexibility in the role is a key requirement, particularly when working to tight client or internal deadlines, and working in off-site locations. 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist in detailed design of electrical control and instrumentation systems from Functional Design Specification (FDS) documents for renewable energy applications
• Production of as-built electrical schematics (CAD expertise)
• Manage schedule for design, manufacture, programming, and testing of control panels – requires liaison with all departments to achieve end result
• Selection and procurement of electrical materials
• Assist in the mechanical design & layout of PLCs, LV distribution, bus bars, and instrumentation hardware in control panels
• Perform electrical panel assembly, wiring and testing
• Perform extensive site work including installation, commissioning and maintenance of electrical panels
• Perform electrical component testing as part of R&D test lab

Requirements- Essential Skills / Attributes

• Minimum 10 years industrial electrical contractor experience
• Extensive experience in industrial instrumentation panel design and assembly
• Production of electrical schematics using AutoCAD or equivalent package
• Proven knowledge of EU/Irish rules for electrical installations and code of practices for industrial applications
• Extensive experience with AC drives, LV protection and distribution equipment, bus bar systems
• Ability to work well with others in fast-paced team-oriented environment
• Excellent work ethic & flexibility

Desirable Experience

• Qualified electrical technician – FETAC level 6 or higher
• PLC programming or software programming experience an asset
• Renewable energy project experience an advantage
