The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation, working in over 50 countries around the world. Since 2007, ZSL’s priority-setting EDGE of Existence programme has sought to conserve the world’s most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species through raising awareness, initiating conservation and building capacity in countries in which they occur. Dependent

We are seeking a Projects Co-ordinator to oversee our Fellowship programme, which supports early career conservation biologists from around the world to research and conserve locally-occurring EDGE species. Each Fellow receives training, technical advice and seed funding to carry out a two year applied research or conservation project on a high-ranking EDGE species, with the option of receiving further support to scale up their initiatives at the end of their projects. Over the next 12 months our priority is to strengthen the training component of the Fellowship programme, through developing online modules and annual 4-week regional training courses in Asia and Africa, plus a two-week conservation leadership training course in the UK.

The post holder will work with the EDGE team and relevant experts to develop the training programme, as well as being the main ZSL contact for current and future EDGE Fellows. Key duties in this varied role include overseeing the design and execution of the regional and UK training courses, reviewing, awarding, administering and financially managing all fellowships, monitoring Fellows’ progress towards their goals, compiling reports, fundraising and assisting with promoting the EDGE of Existence programme.

Candidates should have a post graduate degree or equivalent experience in conservation, plus technical knowledge of applied research techniques, overseas conservation planning and implementation, experience in project management and administration (including managing budgets), grant writing experience and excellent written communication and interpersonal skills. The position will be based at ZSL’s main offices in London. There may be scope for international travel once the regional training courses are operational. The post-holder will have a fixed term ZSL contract for 12 months initially, and the post is available immediately. Salary is dependent on experience.
