Description

The Systematic Observation for Land and Ocean
(SOLO) FP-7 Action of the Global Environment
Monitoring (GEM) unit in the Institute for
Environment and Sustainability (IES) of the Joint
Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, is actively
involved in establishing traceable quality
assurance methodologies suitable for the
validation of optical remote sensing data and
products. Over land, these efforts make use of
verified 3-D radiative transfer models that must
be calibrated against air/space borne
observations before they can be used to assess
the accuracy of field validation practices at a
given test site.
In the context of the PhD project, the objectives
are to 1) the comparison of RT model
simulations against laboratory measurements of
artificial targets acquired under truly controlled
experimental conditions, 2) the simulation of
multi-angular and multi-spectra remote sensing
observations over existing field sites on the
basis of detailed inventories of the structural,
spectro-directional and illumination related
conditions at the time of satellite overpass, and
3) the evaluation of typical field sampling and
up-scaling protocols used in validation efforts of
LAI, FAPAR and albedo validation efforts.
