Description

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Director of International Climate Policy. The Director of International Climate Policy will lead the Energy and Environment team’s work to develop and execute a program to support the framework of the Paris climate agreement and engage state and local governments, tribes, universities, and other subnational actors in climate diplomacy. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of international climate policy and creative ideas for how to demonstrate U.S. commitment to climate action in the absence of federal leadership.

As the largest economy and largest historical emitter of greenhouse gases, the United States is central to the fight against climate change. Lackluster U.S. participation in the global effort to stop climate change is harmful not only from an emissions standpoint but also by eroding the international will to tackle the problem. The Director of International Climate Policy would work with colleagues on the Energy and Environment team to identify opportunities to demonstrate U.S. progress on climate mitigation despite the Trump administration’s posture and lay the groundwork for an ambitious international climate agenda should future administrations reclaim the United States’ leadership role on the world stage.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead in developing and executing American Progress’ priorities on international climate policy in 2018 and beyond.
  • Work with key partners to develop and implement legislative and political strategies at the state and federal level.
  • Represent American Progress in coalitions of other organizations focused on international climate policy.
  • Liaise with members of Congress and Capitol Hill staff to understand and support positive policy ideas or oppose harmful policy changes.
  • Conceive, research, write, and edit original reports and issue briefs on international climate policy.
  • Represent American Progress as a spokesperson in all forms of media as necessary to promote the Energy and Environment team’s policy agenda.
  • Fundraise to expand the program’s reach and support new and developing initiatives.
  • Plan and implement public and private events, meetings, summits, conferences, and other special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree is a plus.
  • At least eight years of experience in policy development, campaign management, legislative advocacy, coalition-building, or related fields.
  • A proven knowledge base in international climate policy issues and an understanding of the Paris climate agreement framework.
  • Experience working with coalitions and a breadth of existing relationships in the climate policy space.
  • Excellent writing, public speaking, and communications skills.
  • Experience in seeking funding or grant writing is a plus.
  • Capitol Hill or executive branch experience is a plus.
  • Commitment to the American Progress’ mission and goals.
