Dakotas & Montana

Ducks Unlimited’s Great Plains Region is seeking an accomplished and driven individual to lead our exciting conservation programs across the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) in the Dakotas and Montana.  These programs are some of our highest priorities in North America and will be a center piece of our new comprehensive campaign.  This position provides the opportunity for leadership to both DU and the entire waterfowl enterprise.  The director will serve as a member of the regional management team to provide strategic thinking and lead targeted implementation to help achieve conservation objectives.  The director will also advise the conservation leadership team on national conservation issues and priority policy efforts.  The director will provide leadership to help guide the collective conservation and fundraising work of various stakeholders (e.g., DU volunteers, state and federal agencies, joint ventures and conservation organizations) across the Great Plains Region.

Specific Duties:

  • Oversee the work of ~30 staff to deliver a broad suite of conservation programs including fee title acquisitions, conservation easements, wetland and grassland restorations and enhancements, extension programs for farmers and ranchers, and conservation business opportunities.
  • Work closely with fundraising staff in the region and across the country to support fundraising efforts for Prairie Pothole Region in both Canada and the U.S.
  • Work closely with public policy staff both in the region and in Washington D.C. to support priority state and federal policy efforts for the PPR.
  • Work closely with the Director of Conservation Planning to ensure science support and evaluation for prairie conservation programs and the development of the next generation of planning tools.
  • Work closely with the Director of Conservation Services to enhance business planning and improve program efficiencies.
  • Serve as a member of the Great Plains Region management team to help provide overall direction for the region, assist in key decisions, and help develop staff technical and leadership skills.
  • Collaborate with volunteers and staff in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana to help develop key policy objectives, major communications themes and support grassroots fundraising efforts.
  • Work with staff to develop landowner spokespersons and advocates for conservation programs.
  • Secure public funding to support priority conservation programs.
  • Coordinate conservation program development and implementation with other conservation organizations, agency partners and interested stakeholders to maximize efficiency of the partners’ collective efforts.
  • Incorporate biological, social, and economic information into conservation program development and implementation.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a BS in wildlife ecology, conservation biology or another appropriate field.  An advanced degree is desirable.
  • At least 10 years of experience in conservation program evaluation, development and/or implementation.
  • At least 5 years of experience in supervising a group of staff.
  • Strong personal commitment to conservation.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience in strategic program development.
  • Experience in developing partnerships and leading broad stakeholder groups to achieve common goals.
  • Demonstrate a creative approach to conservation program development and implementation.
  • Understanding of not-for-profit fundraising efforts.
