Description

The Marine Development Director will provide senior fundraising leadership and support for the Global Marine Division and Conservation International's Marine Program Master Plan. The Marine Program Master Plan identifies a global ocean health index, sustainable fisheries, Seascapes and Oceanscapes as the four most urgent global solutions required to restore ocean health for the benefit of nature and people. The Development Director will work closely with the Senior Vice President and Vice President of Marine Conservation, Marine field staff, the Development Division, the Center for Conservation in Government Division and the Center for Environmental Leadership in Business Division to identify donors and solicit support for CI's marine programs with particular emphasis on the four global solutions detailed in CI's Marine Program Master Plan.  The Development Director will also serve as a key representative for the Global Marine Division in fundraising discussions at CI's headquarters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fundraising: Prepare and/or edit fundraising strategies, documents and presentations to secure gifts from corporations, foundations, individuals, governments and multilateral donors. Meet with donors and prospective donors to cultivate interest in CI's marine programs. Track unfunded needs and manage the fundraising pipeline for the Global Marine Division. Review fundraising opportunities and concepts for alignment with CI's Marine Program Master Plan.  
  • External Relations and Partnerships: Represent the Global Marine Division generally in forums and build the partnerships needed to advance CI's Marine Program Master Plan. This includes participating in interactions with industry leaders, governments and multilateral organizations, NGOs and the private sector. 
  • Internal Representation and Management: Represent the Global Marine Division internally in meetings and forums. Facilitate internal marine fundraising communications between headquarters and field teams.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The position requires up to 10% domestic and international travel

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: 

  • Proven fundraiser with an excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Undergraduate degree required, with coursework or experience in environmental sciences and/or international development 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and management skills 
  • Ability to identify strategic issues and priorities 
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace the mission of Conservation International and the strategies of CI's Marine Program Master Plan 
  • Solid understanding of regional cultures and conservation context.

PREFERRED:  

  • Masters degree in environmental sciences or similar areas of study 
  • French and German language abilities  
  • Experience living overseas and working in an international setting on marine conservation
