Description
Each year, Rare trains local conservationists from some of the most ecologically significant corners of the Earth at its university centers in the UK, Mexico, Indonesia, and soon China. Together, they complete 11 weeks of university-based training, followed by a return to their respective sites to implement one of the most rigorous programs in community outreach available today – the Rare Pride program. They form lasting bonds during training, which continue via email, Skype, phone, and regional gatherings throughout the life of their two-year Pride campaigns (and usually for years to come).

To date, alumni interaction has been somewhat informal. Yet Rare now has more than 100 Pride alumni in 40 countries, all trained in a similar methodology, all experienced in the unique challenges of community based conservation, and all looking for ways to sustain impact in the long term. We have an extraordinary opportunity to harness their enthusiasm and knowledge to launch a cohesive global network that ensures a whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

The Director, Global Conservation Network will be responsible for crafting and implementing this vision. Rare received a startup grant from eBay founder Pierre Omidyar to begin researching best-in-class peer networking platforms and develop recommendations for Rare’s own network. Rare now seeks a highly creative Director to expand up and implement these recommendations, and to execute a wide range of online and offline initiatives to support the ever-widening Rare community of partners and alumni.

  • Build global volunteer teams to assist with content management, translation and site development
  • Facilitate successful long-term conservation strategies by creating and maintaining a global database of partnerships, best practices and case studies, and conservation expertise within the global online platform.
