Description

The Director of Development for the Africa & Madagascar Division is responsible for driving the fundraising planning and strategy as well as act as a liaison between country programs and HQ divisions. The director will be responsible for raising millions annually from government agencies, private foundations, corporations and individuals. The Director of Development will report to the SVP of the Africa & Madagascar Division, and will work with him/her, Country Directors and the CI’s Development Division to: plan and carry out efforts to renew gifts from current donors; identify new prospects; cultivate and solicit donors; prepare grant proposals; communicate with donors on a timely and regular basis; plan and organize fundraising events; represent the division in CI current and planned fundraising events; plan and organize donor recognition events and trips; create new fundraising tools such as a giving campaign to the region; and other opportunities; supervise staff; provide updates on progress to CI board as well as donors and their boards; supervise a fundraising database with an updated unfunded needs list as part of CI annual budget process and oversee the implementation of that budget; represent the Division in internal (within CI) and external (outside CI) meetings with various stakeholders, including governments and donors.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Devise and implement CI’s fundraising strategy for the division, including oversight of document preparation, negotiations, and planning, to generate on-going funding for the division from public agencies, private foundations, corporations, and individuals.
  • Broaden CI’s Africa & Madagascar funding base by engaging with new individual donors as well as those from the public and private sectors.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key donors, and interact directly with them in coordination with the development department at a senior level.
  • Supervise the development and submission of proposals and reports (both cost and technical), including: setting strategy, and providing writing/editing services; as well as ensuring that proposals, reports and other fundraising documents are well written, strategic, tie to regional and global strategies and submitted on schedule.
  • Engage other CI divisions such as CELB, CCG, GI and S&K in the development of proposals to ensure coordination and maximize resources available to CI programs.
  • Represent the Africa & Madagascar division in internal (within CI) and external meetings, presentations and communications with stakeholders and other interested parties from the public, private and civil society sectors.
  • Strengthen the capacity within the Africa & Madagascar field programs to successfully develop and carry out fundraising strategies, including prospect identification, cultivation, proposal development, reporting and adherence to internal procedures.

 

 

Working Conditions:

  • This position is performed from HQ in Arlington, VA.
  • There is the opportunity to telecommute part-time as feasible and necessary.
  • Requires approximately 5-6 trips annually to region of focus or other locations related to duties.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

 

  • Master’s degree in related field and 5+years experience in positions of progressively greater responsibilities in international development and fundraising programs
  • Knowledge of and experience in raising funds for conservation in Africa
  • Knowledge of and experience working in Africa
  • Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Tact and diplomacy in building and maintaining critical relationships, both internally and externally
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to encourage teamwork and collaboration
  • Solid computer skills and experience with standard Microsoft Office software
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French
