The Director will lead a dedicated team of staff and consultants charged with carrying out the mission of Defend our Future, a project of the Environmental Defense Fund dedicated to inspiring young leaders to be climate advocates and champions for change in their communities and workplace. Reporting to the Vice President, Political Affairs, and working closely with other members of the Political Affairs leadership team, s/he will shape and advance the program’s priorities and ensure its continued success.
Key Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall direction and success of Defend Our Future, to ensure the overall execution of campaign and legislative strategies that advance the mission.

Manage and develop funding proposals, budgets, and strategic plans for Defend Our Future; identify and secure restricted funding support.

Directly supervise staff; manage a broader team that supports the functions of Defend; and manage an advisory council comprised of EDF staff from across the organization who provide strategic guidance and support for Defend our Future.

Identify and develop relationships with high-level staff of partners working in the nexus of millennials, diverse communities and climate change, with a focus on civic engagement and advocacy.

Identify and support collaborations with other EDF efforts that are similarly focused on cultivating and engaging young leaders, like Climate Corps.

Develop pathways for Defend our Future members to connect and engage with EDF programs nationally and in key regions.

Foster partnerships with institutions who are focused on engaging young leaders and environmental advocates, including higher education and civic organizations.
Qualifications
- Should generally have at least 10 years grassroots, advocacy, policy, or environmental program implementation/project management experience and an advanced degree in a related field such as environment, policy, or business administration.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage programs and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work constructively with partners and public policy decision makers.
- Experience in project and financial management, as well as drafting, developing, and delivering successful funding proposals to public and private donors.
- Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of small teams in a dynamic and creative environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills (including presentation skills) and the ability to work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience.
