The Director for Climate Policy supports Conservation International’s conservation goals by working with a multi-disciplinary climate change team and CI’s field programs to implement a dynamic climate change strategy to avoid dangerous anthropogenic climate change and resulting global biodiversity loss and devastating human well-being impacts. Working within CI's Center for Conservation and Government, the Director will lead efforts to develop and communicate climate change policies that will help harness the valuable climate mitigating and adapting benefits provided by nature, focusing on Conservation International's priority areas.

In partnership with CI's strategic Climate Change team, the Director will lead the development of CI's policy positions related to forest carbon mitigation strategies and proposals; develop communication materials, coordinate on joint policy approaches, and inform senior leadership of international climate policy developments. In support of CI field programs, the Director for Climate Policy will partner in their efforts to guide and support developing country climate change negotiators, opinion leaders and media to advocate CI's position.

The successful candidate will develop strong and influencial relations with a broad array of stakeholders to achieve a comprehensive international climate agreement that emphasizes the creation of financial incentives for developing countrries and allows for the inclusion of all major greenhouse gas emitters. She/he will participate in developing a research agenda that will support CI's policy agenda and will support the work of the broader Climate Change team by assisting with proposal writing and donor cultivation as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Strategic leadership and direction: Develop and advance a focused international climate change policy strategy to promote the creation of a long-term signal to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases, including financial incentives to prevent deforestation and restore valuable forest habitats. Lead and represent CI at international climate meetings and events.
  • Outreach and coalition-building: Engage climate negotiators and other decision makers from developing and industrialized countries and work with partners, including NGOs, inter-governmental agencies, multi- and bilateral institutions, and indigenous peoples to collaborate toward a comprehensive international climate agreement with strong incentives for forest mitigation activities.
  • Internal guidance: Build understanding and capacity within CI, and provide strategic advice and support to CI field programs to effectively advance the international climate change policy debate. Contribute to proposal writing and donor cultivation.
  • Policy solutions and influence: Through coordination with experts across CI and in partner organizations, lead the development of expertise on key technical and policy questions, and bring this expertise to bear in designing international forest carbon policies.
  • Capacity-building and education: Educate policy makers and opinion leaders on the climate mitigation opportunities presented by forest carbon activities and well-designed policies to promote them, incorporating CI's extensive scientific, technical and on-the-ground expertise and results.

Working Conditions: Position requires up to 35% international travel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills:
  • Master’s degree in international relations, public policy, forestry, natural resource management, or related field with a minimum of 6 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Extensive knowledge of international policies related to climate change and energy, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol; the European Union Emissions Trading System, and other national climate change policies and programs; and related political, social, and economic conditions and issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of forest carbon mitigation strategies.
  • Strong networks with climate and development policy community, developed and industrialized country climate change negotiators and other policy makers, and multi- and bi-lateral climate staff. 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage time and diverse activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, and Excel. 
  • Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet. 
  • Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong writing skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Stong communication and presentation skills that can be adapted to a wide variety of people of different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives
  • Ability to persuasively convey CI's climate change policy objectives to diverse groups.
  • Ability to develop constructive and effective relationships inside and outside CI.
  • Write and edit policy papers, presentations and promotional materials.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional, positive, and approachable demeanor.
  • Experience leading and/or participating on an effective team
  • Fluency in Spanish, French or Portuguese.
