Description

At UNEP-WCMC we’re building web applications to help save the planet. We’re a close-knit team of passionate developers, UX/UI designers and product managers putting our skills towards a mission that is tackling one of the biggest problems of our time - the massive loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction that’s pushing the planet to the brink of the 6th mass extinction.

We’re looking for a motivated DevOps to join our growing team and work with us on projects ranging from our flagship sites such as ProtectedPlanet and Species+ to a variety of smaller Informatics projects such as Ocean+Data and Post2020 Agenda.

You don’t need a background in biodiversity to contribute, but you will need experience in developer operations and linux system administration along with a passion for collaborative teams and continued learning.

Our web projects are typically built with JavaScript (Vue.js) on top of Ruby on Rails. Most of our projects involve databases (PostgreSQL) and mapping and geospatial analysis so experience with monitoring and managing PostGIS, ESRI, Google Earth Engine or similar would be beneficial. We also work in process automation and data science where experience in python or shell scripting would be valuable. If you’ve worked with containers (e.g. docker) and scalable deployment such as kubernetes so much the better!

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute with your existing DevOps skills whilst learning how to deliver automated data processing and data science pipelines in a modern, scalable architecture.

We will provide you with the chance to work with like-minded individuals, in an environment that supports your technical and personal skills development where you will work on high profile projects which really make a difference to the field of conservation in an area aligned to our strategic aims and broader global initiatives. In addition to training and development opportunities, we offer a competitive salary and benefits package, including generous pension contributions.

WCMC attaches great importance to addressing safeguarding and ethical considerations in all activities carried out by its staff, including where partner organisations or individuals are part of the delivery of our work. This includes children and vulnerable adults in the community who may be vulnerable to abuse. WCMC act with integrity, are transparent and expect applicants to share the same values.

WCMC is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all staff and job applicants. We aim to create a supportive and inclusive working environment in which all individuals are able to make best use of their skills, free from discrimination or harassment, and in which all decisions are based on merit. We do not discriminate against staff on the basis of age; race; sex; disability; gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity; religion; faith or belief.

If you are looking for a rewarding and challenging post where you can impress us with your scientific writing and communication and outreach skills, we want to hear from you. Please complete our application form and send it together with your CV and a short covering letter through the link below by 18th January 2021 UNEP-WCMC is an equal opportunities employer.  This is not a UN post. Applicants must be able to evidence the right to work in the UK.
