C40 is a network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities, who are working to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis, and create a future where everyone, everywhere can thrive. Mayors of C40 cities are committed to using a science-based and people-focused approach to help the world limit global heating to 1.5°C and build healthy, equitable and resilient communities. Through a Global Green New Deal, mayors are working alongside a broad coalition of representatives from labour, business, the youth climate movement and civil society to go further and faster than ever before.

C40’s team of 200+ staff is headquartered in New York, with offices in London, Joburg, Singapore, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations, with the Office of the Chair based in Los Angeles.  

The strategic direction of the organisation is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors which is chaired by the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. A nine-person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40. C40’s three core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and Realdania.

Position Description

The Deputy Regional Director will support the C40 Regional Director and the Steering Committee cities to ensure C40 is responsive and provides effective assistance to its member cities in East, Southeast Asia and Oceania. The Deputy RegionalDirector will work to advance cities’ participation in C40 activities and support the Regional Director in the delivery of specific functions of particular importance to the C40 cities in the region to ensure that they fully comply with the C40 Participation Standards.

Responsibilities

The C40 Deputy Regional Director will have the following focus points:

  • Support the Regional Director in the work to build and maintain member city relationships and ensure that cities are satisfied with and benefit from their partnership with C40.
  • In close liaison with the Regional Director, work with the relevant C40 teams to leverage a high level of engagement from cities in the region and ensure that they meet the mandatory C40 Participation Standards and achieve year-on-year progress.
  • Assist the Regional Director and the C40 Director of Regions in implementing C40’s strategy for East, Southeast Asia and Oceania including its target to support the region’s cities in developing and implementing robust and ambitious Climate Action plans.
  • Support the Regional Director in identifying and facilitating opportunities for cities to collaborate with each other and with partner organizations within the region and globally.
  • Support the Regional Director and C40 Communications and Events Teams to engage mayors and city staff and ensure global promotion of C40 cities’ initiatives from the region.
  • Work with possible C40 City Advisers to be stationed in the member cities in the delivery of their project outcomes in the respective cities.

Person Specification:

  • Substantive experience of working in city and/or central government administrations or city and climate change relevant NGO or business sectors.
  • Familiarity with a network of senior contacts within cities, current/potential partner organizations, and national governments.
  • Proven ability to engage with decision-makers at a political or executive decision-making level within cities in the region.
  • Ability to work in an international organization and across regional and cultural boundaries.
  • Strong technical or policy background in climate change and climate science
  • Significant experience in a relevant field connected to climate change and/or sustainable urban development
  • Relevant academic degree ideally at Masters.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement, with knowledge of another language in the region an advantage

Other Requirements:

Applicants must already have the right to work in the relevant South East Asia city. Some travel may be required as part of the role.

Salary: SGD 124,969, MYR 216,400, IDR 612,271,360, PHP 1,979,407, THB 1,231,493.00
