Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the Deputy Laboratory Director/COO will oversee all business operations for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, a national laboratory of the U.S Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, managed and operated by the Alliance of Sustainable Energy, LLC.
This role requires a combination of strong leadership skills, judgment with political savvy and polish at the senior executive level as well as equal proficiency in managing all aspects of laboratory operations. Without question, this position represents an outstanding opportunity to provide operational leadership within a dynamic national laboratory in the developing of new renewable and clean energy technologies to benefit our environment and the worldwide economy.
This position has responsibilities to manage relationships with the Alliance Board of Directors and the Department of Energy at both the location and national level while leading and supporting NREL’s major operational goals and strategic initiatives. The Deputy Lab Director/COO will directly manage the following functions: Environmental Health, Safety, Security & Quality, Finance, Human Resources, Contracts & Business Services, Information Services, Infrastructure & Campus Development and Site Operations, with over 900 staff members and a budget of nearly $230 million including the operating and construction budget. Principal accountabilities and success measures include:

? Establish operational performance objectives to enable mission success.
? Connect, manage and develop relationships with the Alliance Board of Directors, the Alliance Leadership Team, the operations workforce, and within the Department of Energy.
? Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Laboratory operations, DOE governance and programs to support the culture of the Laboratory
? Develop and lead high performance operational leadership teams Demonstrate courageous leadership and calmly endure and persist through challenges 
? Engage key stakeholders to promote Lab vitality and support for the Lab mission.
? Visualize and communicate the future state operations at the Laboratory in collaboration with other senior leaders of the organization.
? Demonstrate ethics and quality of purpose above reproach.
Previous management and budget administration experience required. Program strategy, development and implementation experience required. Degree in appropriate field may be required.
Extensive knowledge of the renewable energy industry, as appropriate, as well as regulations, principles, procedures and practices of relevant discipline(s). Solves variety of multi-dimensional problems in absence of guidelines or precedents.

Models and embeds NREL values. Keeps abreast of key issues affecting respective Center/Office industry discipline(s). Builds effective teams; creates strong morale and spirit; shares wins and successes. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management.
• Must possess a relevant advanced degree or equivalent and a minimum of 15 years of related national laboratory operational work experience and/or training.
• An established record working with the Department of Energy and senior management up to and including the Board level is required 
• Experience as a senior operations leader (COO, VP Operations) within a complex and sophisticated environment is critical. Individuals with a background leading large teams in comparable functions would be preferred within the renewable energy or energy efficiency marketplace
• A demonstrated thorough understanding of laboratory management and governance, financial planning and interdisciplinary laboratory applications is critical.
• A demonstrated ability to apply seasoned business judgment to operational issues and advise on appropriate solutions is required. 
• A successful track record of developing and sustaining deep relationships with significant stakeholders is required. Examples will be sought.
• Must possess a successful track record involving business and organizational planning, coordination and execution within a national laboratory culture.
Exceptional leadership capabilities.
Proven experience working for a government contractor or National Laboratory in a similar capacity is highly desired. 
Ability to think strategically and creatively, this visionary will need experience identifying problems and implementing solutions. 
Must be a big picture thinker while remaining organized and calm when under pressure.
As a spokesperson for organization, must have the ability to show sensitivity and to establish respect, credibility and trust in government and non-government settings.
