LOCATION: New Orleans, LA DEPARTMENT: Conservation Programs REPORTS TO: Director, Fish Conservation and Gulf Restoration Program DURATION: Full-time
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM: Ocean Conservancy’s Gulf Restoration Program (GRP) is a dynamic initiative focused on the restoration and enhancement of the Gulf of Mexico following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. Ocean Conservancy has provided strategic leadership in addressing key threats facing the Gulf of Mexico for over two decades. Key accomplishments include successfully promoting the use of fishing gear that reduced incidental taking of endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, transforming regional fishery management systems to focus on science-based management plans that end overfishing and restore depleted fish populations, and launching the largest global volunteer event of its kind—the International Coastal Cleanup. We are now combining our regional expertise with a seasoned team of Exxon Valdez oil spill experts to ensure the effective restoration and enhancement of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and its dependent communities. The Deputy Director of the GRP will work in concert with our team of professionals to ensure a science-based and community- supported restoration and enhancement effort by managing the operations of our Gulf Restoration Center and leveraging strong communications, effective policies, and innovative partnerships. Ocean Conservancy envisions a healthy and productive Gulf of Mexico that supports resilient ocean ecosystems and coastal communities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Deputy Director is responsible for working collaboratively with the Director of Fish Conservation and GRP, the Director of Conservation Science and GRP staff to ensure that a science-based, community-supported restoration and enhancement plan is established that fully restores the Gulf of Mexico. To accomplish this goal, the Deputy Director manages our Gulf Restoration Center operations, including staff supervision, and provides day-to-day, on-the-ground leadership of Ocean Conservancy’s presence and program in Louisiana and on the Gulf coast. The Gulf Restoration Center will focus on the development and implementation of a science-based, community-supported restoration plan that will fully restore the Gulf ecosystem and assist affected communities. The Deputy Director will also work in coordination with conservation science and policy staff to identify, develop and advance national and state-based policies that lead to the restoration and enhancement of the Gulf; with government relations and outreach experts to ensure the adoption of effective restoration policies at the state, federal and local level; and with Ocean Conservancy’s communication team to build strong public support and political will for action.
