The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to lead and manage SANBI’s spatial analyses, prioritisation and biodiversity planning programme of work including support of the integration of biodiversity priorities in policy, legislation, knowledge resources as well as strategic projects related to reducing loss of-restoration and protection of biodiversity.
The position requires a postgraduate degree in Environmental or Natural Science or an equivalent and relevant qualification at NQF 8. A postgraduate degree or equivalent and relevant qualification at NQF 9 will be an added advantage. The position also requires a minimum of 8 years’ relevant experience, 4 years of which should be in the first line management/supervisory position(s).
The following competencies are required: extensive knowledge of systematic biodiversity planning products and processes relevant to environmental management; well-rounded experience in the implementation of relevant legislation, policy, procedures, processes, knowledge-based projects, and regulatory framework; advance knowledge and understanding of project administration, planning and organising, writing reports, developing and implementing policies and procedures, financial management, and people management skills; in-depth organisational skills, analytical and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
- Contribute to the Implementation of Biodiversity Information and Planning Division’s strategic plans;
- Lead the development and implementation of policy, systems and procedures for ensuring that biodiversity plans are mainstreamed into environmental planning and regulatory processes;
- Support the development of spatial biodiversity information, products and tools within SANBI that are developed to inform environmental management;
- Manage and facilitate human capital development, change and transformation within the Unit including supporting human capital development in the field of biodiversity planning; and
- Manage governance, risk and compliance.
