Job Title: Deputy Director, Beyond Coal

Department: Conservation

Reports to: Campaign Director, Beyond Coal

Supervises: Campaign Representatives

Sierra Club is currently seeking a Deputy Director to support the Beyond Coal Campaign. The Beyond Coal Campaign focuses on ending coal's contribution to global warming by 2030 through multiple initiatives, including stopping the construction of all new coal, liquid coal and coal to gas plants; accelerating the retirement of existing coal power and replacing with an equivalent amount of renewable energy (wind, solar, geothermal); stopping coal imports and exports; and ensuring federal rules result in retirement of existing coal plants, dramatic pollution reductions, and new investments in clean energy. The Beyond Coal Campaign is currently the fastest growing campaign of the Climate Recovery Partnership.

Reporting to the Beyond Coal Campaign Director, the Deputy Director leads major national initiatives of the Beyond Coal Campaign, such as securing strong federal rules to tackle coal pollution and global warming, and national work on clean energy solutions to move the nation beyond coal. The Deputy Director has overall program and staff management responsibility, and provides experienced management and strategic planning, for the campaign initiatives that are carried out at the national level. The Deputy works closely with the Deputy Conservation Director, Beyond Coal Campaign Director and Associate Director of National Campaigns. The Director represents the Sierra Club and the campaign as a spokesperson.

Job Activities:

  • Ensures effective coordination of all national level campaign work with various arms of the Sierra Club (Organizing, Online Organizing, Legal, Communications, Chapters, Lobbying)
  • Analyzes issues of national importance and collaborates with other campaign staff and volunteer leaders in formulating and implementing strategy
  • Provides coordination and oversight on national components of the Beyond Coal campaign
  • Works to develop and insure that the chapters assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign
  • Recruits, supervises, trains, directs staff ensuring productivity and accountability
  • Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers
  • Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration
  • Assists the Campaign Director in preparing and reviewing campaign materials and reports
  • Represents the Sierra Club and the Beyond Coal Campaign as a spokesperson
  • Handles additional projects and duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field. Advanced degree preferred
  • 3-5 years experience in the planning and management of grassroots campaigns
  • Content knowledge of coal industry, clean energy technology/policy, global warming/climate change preferred
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in the planning, oversight, and execution of campaigns
  • 2-3 years prior supervisory experience
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required
