Position Summary: 

The Deputy Controller, Field Offices is a key member of the Accounting team. S/he will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of field office accounting and ensuring the field offices' compliance and adherence to US and local accounting standards and practices, local governmental financial reporting requirements and Rainforest Alliance policies and procedures.  Working alongside the Deputy Controller, US, s/he will provide support and backing to the Controller.  In addition to the field office staff, s/he will also work closely and support the Finance, Contract & Grants Administration and IT teams.  S/he will have solid- and dotted-line supervisory responsibility for field office-based accounting staff. 

Responsibilties: 
  • Oversee the delivery of field office accounting support including managing and motivating field office accounting staff; 
  • Ensure field office compliance with policies & procedures and deadlines;
  • Ensure field office compliance with required local filings;
  • Train a variety of field office staff on accounting systems, processes, policies and procedures;
  • Monitor field office bank account balances and monthly reconciliations, and ensure field office credit card policy compliance;
  • Oversee the maintenance of field office general ledger and subsidiary accounts, and approve journal entries;
  • Review, approve, and upload monthly field office Accounting Report (FOAR);
  • Review field office accounting policies and procedures, update and/or create as needed;
  • Participate in annual audit and 990 preparation, including  the preparation of and review of FO-related audit work papers;
  • Participate in field office audit and tax return preparation;
  • Provide HQ and field office budget and financial analysis support;
  • Provide Grant & Contract Administration support for donor reports and proposals:
  • Serve as a backup for the Controller and/or Deputy Controller, US; and
  • Other tasks as assigned. 
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance;
  • Minimum 7 years relevant experience; nonprofit sector experience a plus;
  • Prior experience managing professional staff in finance and accounting environment;
  • Effective and strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with accounting system software and Excel;
  • Spanish language skills a plus;
  • Proven ability to work in a fast paced, high growth and culturally diverse environment; and
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10 percent of the time.
