Position/Project Specifics:
The Clearinghouse for Dam Removal Information (CDRI) is managed by the Water Resources Collections and Archives (WRCA) located on the University of California, Riverside campus.  CDRI is an online repository for documents about proposed and completed dam removal projects across the United States.  Dam removal is an increasingly common tool used to restore rivers and/or fisheries and eliminate safety concerns. However, dam removal information is hard to find.  The goal of CDRI is to collect documents from government agencies, consulting firms, universities and non-profit organizations so those making decisions about dam removal can access all of the information in one place.  There are currently over 300 records in the CDRI database. News/Events postings are updated weekly. The website receives an average of 1,700 unique visitors per month.

The CDRI employee will be responsible for:

  • Updating the website with news and events as discovered (bi-monthly)
  • Adding records to the CDRI database when provided by practitioners as time allows (irregular) and identify items to be added to the database
  • Answering or passing-on reference queries to WRCA staff as appropriate
  • Working with the CDRI Advisory Board to schedule and lead quarterly conference calls
  • Participating in coordinating outreach activities to increase awareness of CDRI's existence
    • Updating the electronic brochure and poster as needed
    • Following through on implementing Advisory Board recommendations
    • Fostering partnerships with appropriate agencies, non-governmental organizations and consulting firms.

Knowledge and Skills Required:
At the lower end of the range, assignments are complicated by such factors as interspersed alphabetic and numerical characters and special symbols, frequent use of special function keys or program controls, extensive procedural instructions, source documents with numerous data items or formats, and/or data that has to be converted from one form to another.

At the upper end of the range, assignments are substantially more complicated because:

  • Source documents may be unedited, uncoded, or unformatted, thus requiring substantive knowledge of the data .
  • Source documents are prepared by the public and therefore have a greater likelihood of errors or misplaced data.
  • The transcriber is retrieving and changing records that are already in the data processing system.
  • The transcriber participates in testing and debugging new data transcribing programs.
  • The transcriber balances data forms with spreadsheets to verify proper entry.

Supervisory Controls:
At the lower end of the range, the supervisor or higher graded employee assigns specific tasks and provides clear, detailed, and specific instructions on the methods to be used in completing those tasks.  An experienced employee is available to solve problems that might arise.

At the upper end of the range, the employee receives daily, weekly, or even monthly directions and is expected to independently perform the recurring work. Within established procedures, the employee independently performs tasks sequences.  Direction is available when technical or procedural problems are encountered.

In all cases, the supervisor insures that the employee works effectively and produces a high quality end product.

Guidelines:
Guides may be standing operating procedures, oral and written instructions, and equipment manuals.

At the lower end of the range, the guides are directly applicable and specific.  At the upper end of the range, the guides often require careful study or cross-referencing to locate the applicable rule or answer and can involve some interpretation or judgment to resolve the issue.

Complexity:
At the lower end of the range tasks are clear-cut and directly related.   There is little or no choice in deciding what needs to be done.  Actions to be taken or responses to be made are readily discernible.

At the upper end of the range, transcribers must shift rapidly from one assignment to another and have mastery over different procedures, formats, coding, or other features.  Each assignment will often have steps or processes that vary depending upon factors such as the reason the work is being performed or the conditions under which it is being performed.  The employee has to be independent in recognizing such differences, choosing the right course of action, and then executing the proper sequences to complete the work.

Scope and Effect:
The employee's work affects the accuracy of databases and stock assessments.  Incorrectly processed statistical data can result in faulty assessments and unsound management decisions.

Personal Contacts:
Contacts are with other employees of PSMFC and with state employees.

Purpose of Contacts:
Contacts are established to exchange information, ensure the orderly progression of work to be done, and to obtain information needed to complete or correct data and solve any data problems.

Physical Demands:
The position is sedentary and require reaching, lifting, and carrying of light items.  The ability to lift 30 pound boxes of data sheets is occasionally necessary.

Work Environment:
The work is performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heating, and ventilation.

PSMFC is an EEO/AAP employer. We maintain a drug free workplace.
