Data Engineer

Summary

Climate Advisers Trust —a respected research and public policy group dedicated to strengthening climate action in the United States and around the world—seeks a Data Engineer to join our growing team. 

The Data Engineer will oversee the development and design of a new, unprecedented database to support Climate Advisers Trust’s Radical Transparency (RT) project. Drawing on financial databases such as Bloomberg and Refinitiv, the database will map important relationships among companies and between companies and financiers to identify the individuals, companies, and investors linked to deforestation. The Data Manager will be responsible for delivering the development of the database by a selected contractor, including establishing set deliverables, monitoring progress, securing necessary data, and contributing to the database strategy. Additionally, the Data Engineer will lead partnerships necessary for the successful creation of the database, including with data vendors such as Bloomberg and data innovators such as Global Forest Watch and Trase.

Responsibilities

Lead Data Acquisition 

  • Identify the data in financial databases most relevant to the RT project
  • Manage data acquisition from data vendors
  • Identify and procure supplemental data sets from civil society and government agencies
  • Help acquire, clean and process data as needed
  • Provide necessary CAT resources for database creation (such as AWS account)

Contribute to Database Strategy

  • Co-create the structure and content of the database with the database contractor
  • Lead the strategy for direct database access
  • Provide input into the strategy for creating the API by the database contractor

Manage data contractors and support database creation

  • Oversee scope of work for data contractors, including providing input into database creation decisions
  • Monitor progress of data contractors and report progress to RT Team
  • Manage available budget for data contractors over term of project
  • Serve as point of contact for all inquiries from the data contractors

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in database creation and management
  • Advanced degree and/or certifications in data science or a related field
  • Knowledge of and hands-on experience with financial databases such as Refinitiv, Bloomberg, IIS, or others
  • Understanding of graph databases and relationship mapping, particularly of ownership structures and financial flows
  • Ability to clean, process, and ingest data of different types
  • Project management experience
  • Preferable skills: Knowledge of agricultural supply chains;  Understanding of corporate sustainability related to land use; Advanced knowledge of graph databases
