Description

Main duties:

The selected candidate will work in the Predictability and Diagnostics Section of the Research Department on the EU-funded GLOWASIS (GLObal Water Scarcity Information Service) project.

The main objective of GLOWASIS is to pre-validate a GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) global service for water scarcity information on European and global scales. ECMWF probabilistic forecasts of severe weather conditions leading to droughts and flooding will be assessed. Particular emphasis will be put on severe weather events linked to water resources using new products such as the Extreme Forecast Index (EFI). The project is closely linked to the European Flood Alert System (EFAS) project, which is a European Commission initiative to increase preparedness for riverine floods across Europe by utilising medium-range atmospheric ensemble forecasts.

The selected candidate will provide the main ECMWF contribution to the GLOWASIS project and is expected to work in close collaboration with the group working on the development and implementation of EFAS at ECMWF.

The main duties comprise:

  • Liaising with the GLOWASIS partners, supporting access to ECMWF products for them, and preparing ECMWF deliverables to the GLOWASIS project
  • Contributing to the development of probabilistic products and related verification measures for relevant variables
  • Analysing selected case studies of flood and drought events across the globe using the EFAS hydrological model
  • Contributing to the development and support of ECMWF forecasting systems, including on-call support for EFAS if required

Qualifications:

PhD level or equivalent in meteorology, hydrology or environmental science or a related subject. Experience in hydro-meteorology and with probabilistic prediction systems is welcomed. Good knowledge of programming (Fortran, Python, C) and UNIX scripting is desirable.

The working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have a good knowledge of one of the other working languages of ECMWF. Interviews will be conducted in English.

Remuneration:

Typically within the range of £3,795.00 to £5,255.00 per month net of tax, depending upon qualifications, experience, personal situation and eligibility for expatriation allowance. A deduction of either £33.62 per beneficiary or 4.38% of the monthly remuneration will be made for the supplementary health insurance scheme.

Starting date: 1 January 2011, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Length of contract: One-year with a possible extension of a further year.
