Position Overview
 
This position will be responsible for managing a number of key initiatives ranging from an evaluation of climate compatible development in South America to the development of appropriate metrics for long-term monitoring and assessments of Rare’s work. S/he will provide technical reports and analysis to both internal and external audiences including communications and development departments, senior management, regional offices, scientific community, and Rare partners.  S/he will also help facilitate organizational learning and adaptive management, through training, cross-regional initiatives, and presentations.  This position will work closely with the Director, Conservation Research and Monitoring, as well as with other Global Programs departments, such as Training and Quality Management and Improvement, and monitoring experts in each region.
 
The ideal candidate has skills in monitoring and evaluation of conservation programs, with an emphasis on experience with the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation.  She/he has the ability to synthesize and communicate the latest conservation or evaluation science to diverse stakeholders, with some experience in climate change science, adaptation, or impacts.  S/he has the academic and/or practical experience in teaching or mentoring in marine or terrestrial/watershed conservation, sociological surveys and/or impact assessment.  S/he has the ability to multi-task, oversee multiple concurrent projects, and proven success managing projects and meeting strict deadlines involving multiple stakeholders. S/he will have strong project management skills, history of proactive leadership, successful relationship management skills, consultative and results oriented.

 Key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate impact assessment data and providing internal and external reports
  • Provide oversight on key tasks, activities, and deliverables for climate change projects
  • Review and provide guidance on monitoring related training content and tools
  • Teach, coach, and mentor trainers on monitoring the impact of Rare Pride campaigns
  • Support cross-regional monitoring and learning initiatives
  • Review monitoring metrics and reporting for consistency
  • Review technical reports/papers for up to date guidance on key metrics

 Required Qualifications

  • Five plus (5+) years of professional experience in conservation or monitoring and evaluation fields
  • A strong understanding of conservation science, marine and/or biodiversity issues especially those related to community engagement and community based conservation
  • A strong understanding of climate change impacts, adaptation, and other responses
  • Experience with developing appropriate metrics for results-based management
  • Proven expertise in project planning, project management, and management skills
  • Demonstrable teaching, training, or coaching experience and proven success in being able to thrive in team environments.
  • Enjoys working with people and have a strong understanding of cultural differences
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and manage others even without direct supervisory function.
  • The ability to self-manage and to adjust to competing priorities and allocate time as necessary to get the job done.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Bahasa Indonesian, or French a plus
  • A Master’s Degree (desired), or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (required) in the fields of marine/biodiversity conservation, communications, or community based outreach/management
