Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is seeking an experienced Conservation Biologist to oversee the establishment of new conservation projects, supervise and administer ongoing projects focusing on the world’s most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) mammals and amphibians. EDGE species represent a disproportionately high amount of phylogenetic diversity and are highly threatened. Through its EDGE of Existence programme, ZSL aims to: raise awareness of EDGE species that are not receiving sufficient conservation attention; help build conservation capacity in countries in which they occur through offering training fellowships to aspiring in-country conservationists; and support the implementation of effective conservation actions that will decrease extinction risk.

The post holder will be based primarily at the ZSL main offices in London, but will be involved in frequent international travel to provide technical advice to ongoing projects as well as helping to develop new projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • advising EDGE Fellows and field teams on project planning, implementation and analysis of results (both from the UK, and through site visits where necessary);
  • overseeing research and conservation outputs for assigned projects;
  • production of regular progress and technical reports;
  • assisting with the development of a comprehensive training package for EDGE Fellows, including creation of online learning modules covering aspects of conservation project planning and implementation;
  • fundraising for new and ongoing conservation projects.

Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent experience, a strong conservation research background, a proven track record in managing large-scale field projects, and a proven ability to operate in politically challenging environments. He/she should be able to work independently in demanding field conditions, and have an aptitude both for managing field teams and for fostering relationships with institutional partners. Excellent written/oral communication and presentation skills are essential. Experience in a range of field research and conservation techniques and convening workshops is also desirable.

Further details of the EDGE of Existence programme can be gained from the EDGE website (www.edgeofexistence.org) and more details on the post, if required, from Carly Waterman (carly.waterman@zsl.org)

The post-holder will have a fixed term ZSL contract for 12 months and the post is available immediately. Applicants should send their CV with details of two referees and a covering letter, detailing relevant experience and skills and including a possible start date, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org).
