Purpose and General Description

The Conservation and Information Coordinator, BC Region, supports the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s actions to conserve biodiversity in BC by providing support to the conservation planning and land management team as well as other departments dependent on accurate and timely land information. This position builds capacity by supporting information entry in NCC’s internal systems (Daisy and LIS), reports, conservation planning documents, spatial planning and documentation, assisting with field work and events as needed and coordinating field data collection and entry and protocols. The Conservation and Information Coordinator will work closely with regional conservation staff to ensure NCC-BC is meeting their land-based goals and that conservation staff have the support and tools that they need to work effectively and efficiently.

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this position is to support conservation staff by providing information, organizing information and leading initiatives that enhance delivery of conservation in the Region.

Duties and Responsibilities

Conservation Planning and Information (35%)

  • Provide support to the BC sub regions to assist in the completion of Natural Area Conservation Plans (NACPs) and NACP annual progress reports.
  • Use NCC’s Land Information System (LIS) to identify priorities, trends, and opportunities for coordination and capacity needs.
  • Support data entry and records management where needed and ensure data quality in LIS and in Daisy.
  • Support data collection, analysis and report writing for regional conservation planning and biodiversity assessment projects.
  • Support sub regions in the preparation of Conservation Project Summaries, Property Management Plans, Baseline Inventories and Property Inspections as required.
  • Assist in preparing quarterly and annual reports on biodiversity and threats on NCC conservation areas.
  • Support emerging planning and conservation initiatives (e.g. BC Conservation Lands Partnership) as directed by the Director of Science and Stewardship and stay informed of any new opportunities.
  • Support the GIS Analyst as needed.

Land, Water and Species Management (35%)

  • Provide guidance and support on NCC’s standards and support the coordination and sharing of land management techniques, protocols, monitoring and reporting including the use of technology in the field.
  • Evaluate and report on NCC’s conservation success, monitor success of current land management practises and identify innovative approaches and tools that could help strengthen NCC’s land management work.
  • Support sub regions in undertaking field inventories, monitoring and implementation of conservation actions as required.
  • Assist sub regional conservation staff in the selection and engagement of contractors and suppliers and provide guidance on regional administrative procedures.
  • Support senior staff in tracking implementation of regional wide funding programs
  • Support senior staff in tracking progress on completion of NCC’s annual deliverables.

Fundraising, Special Projects, Administration (15%)

  • Support the development of funding proposals and presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Vice President, the Director of Conservation and the Director of Science and Stewardship.

Health and Safety (10%)

  • Support Director of Conservation Planning and Stewardship to ensure the Region has a strong health and safety culture
  • Track First Aid certification, First Aid kits, BC Health and Safety regulations. Ensure all information is stored appropriately.

Academic and Expert Partnerships (5%)

  • Work with sub-regional conservation staff to maintain NCC’s list of priority research projects.
  • Provide regular reports on academic and research partnerships.
  • Support engagement of experts (e.g. consultants, naturalists) in assisting with conservation and restoration planning.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Honours degree in a field related to conservation or equivalent with a minimum of two years related experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles of applied conservation biology, conservation planning and management.
  • Knowledge of BC’s ecosystems, vegetation communities and species.
  • Basic GIS skills, or willingness to acquire them.
  • Familiarity with databases and information management is an asset
  • Familiar with NatureServe Centre, BC Conservation Data Centre and other sources of biodiversity information.
  • Familiar with current invasive species threats and control mechanisms.
  • Must have excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with great attention to detail and ability to design and manage multiple time sensitive complex projects.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems using the available resource and use creativity in producing output products.
  • Ability to interact positively with a wide range of people, including scientists, government officials, landowners, NCC staff, donors, and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of field safety training and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
