Description

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has supported the development of wildlife-based conservancies across Africa. In 2014, AWF proposed the concept of conservancies to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) as a means of expanding habitat protection, diversifying tourism experiences and engaging landowners and communities directly in wildlife conservation through conservancies. UWA was very supportive of the idea and as a result AWF initiated in partnership with UWA the piloting of three conservancies in landscapes surrounding Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley National Parks (LMNP, MFNP, and KVNP) respectively.

The development of wildlife conservancies in Africa takes careful planning, deep engagement with communities, capacity building and formation of new partnerships. AWF provided technical guidance and support to develop governance structures (the Executive, the Constitution, Business plans, ecological assessment and management plans).

AWF is one of the five consortium partners implementing a five-year USAID-funded Biodiversity for Resilience Activity led by RTI. The B4R Activity is building on the work initiated during the previous Bridge Program that focused on Conservancy development. One of the key roles of AWF is to operationalize the three conservancies.

With support from the B4R Activity, three Conservancies (Rurambira, Murchison Community Conservancy and Karenga Community Wildlife Area (KCWA) have been developed and have now reached a level where they can start their operations and further their growth. The three Conservancies have democratically elected Executive Committees who oversee the management of the Conservancies.

In collaboration with the B4R Team, the three Conservancies are now seeking services of consultants working as Conservancy Managers to help with the day-to-day management of the Conservancy operations. The Conservancy Managers will work in the following three Conservancies: Rurambira in the Lake Mburo Landscape, Murchison Community Conservancy in the Murchison Landscape and KKAKKA in the Kidepo Landscape.

Location and Reporting

The Conservancy Managers will be located in the Landscapes of Lake Mburo, Murchison and Kidepo and will report to the Executive Committees of the respective Conservancies.

Applicants should indicate their preferred landscapes.

Terms of Reference Summary

This consultancy is responsible for management of Conservancy operations in three landscapes of Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls and Kidepo. The conservancies are intended to promote a healthy ecosystem that supports wildlife, livestock and human needs, including support for improvement of degraded areas by putting in place appropriate mitigation and regeneration strategies.
